Hey guys,
I got my 605 today and set it up, however, I'm having a major issue. I put in The Day After Tomorrow so I could enjoy DTS-HD MA. However, when it gets to the end of the Fox intro, the unit shuts off. I turn it back on, and it shuts off like a minute later (looks to be loud scenes doing it). I went through and checked all my wiring. It's fine. Also, I have a Popcorn Hour (media unit) on the 2nd HDMI and I just cranked up some songs (75+) and they worked flawlessly. The problem has to be the PS3. Any ideas? Talk about ruining a good day. Oh, the unit was tested on a power strip and directly into the wall too. Same results. |

I think there's a firmware update you need to get from onkyo... you can either take it to a service center for onkyo's or you can put an update disk in your dvd player, as long as the audio is hooked up through optical. Use the search, you should find a better answer there than mine....

Number one: Make sure the 605 can breathe, you need at least 4-6 inches above for proper heat dissapation. Sounds like it's going into protect mode because of heat. This is especially true if it's happening during loud, or a super dynamic part of the audio track, as the reciever is pushing more watts to the speakers it's heating up. I would see if that's your issue, put it on the ground away from any covers and try it again. As for the media unit, I don't belive the reciever has to do much with the audio from a 2 source, and especially if it's not at 8+MBS like a blu would be.

I found the problem after extensive testing.
I kept playing the same scene over and over to eliminate possibilities. I could watch the scene at 55 or less (VOL), but 60+ crashed the receiver. After unplugging speakers one by one, I found out that my back left speaker was causing the crash. With it unplugged I could crank it to 90 and be just fine. Unfortunately, this speak is in the ceiling and I'm not sure if it can be replaced (or how). So, I've unplugged it for now unless someone has any ideas how to limit the volume or whatever for just that speaker. Everything else is great! I've got The Day After Tomorrow cranking right now in DTS-HD MA. ![]() |

I had this problem with an older reciever that I had. It happened when the wires were touching each other. Perhaps your wires have shifted in the ceiling or maybe a mouse has gotten up there and bitten through, perhaps causing some grounding. I'd try one more time to hook up that left speaker and make sure all of your wires are not touching, if it still cuts off then you're gonna have to start digging around in your ceiling.

You might try checking the crossover setting recommendations on the speaker and then adjust the 605. Also you might have to change the Ohm setting on the 605 for your particular speakers. Most speaker manufacturers will help via email to solve the issue.

You might try checking the speaker impeadance with a multimeter if you have one. Do you know what ohms the speaker is?
Should be like 6 or 8. Just remove your wires from the receiver and test them. I think the receiver could be shutting down if your speaker ohms are too low at high volume. I have seen some speakers as low as 3 ohms. I beleive the Onkyo specs are for 6 to be the lowest. |

Also, I heard the speaker sound a little distorted at some points when playing it before. I also figure out why the music worked before. It was only sending music to the front 3 speakers. |

My receiver even gave me a clue: "Chk Sp" it said on its read-out just prior to shutting off. That meant "Check Speaker wiring" but I didn't clue in! |

My bro bought a new energy centre channel and he hooked up to his onkyo 806. His other speakers are cerwin vega's. He was doing to the testone to see if all the speakers were sounding properly. When it got to the left front speaker is sounded very low and the receiver shut down, and a red light started blinking. He unhooked all the speaker wires and unplugged the receiver for an hour becasue that's what the manual said to do. He plugged it back in , but he can't power it up. Is there a way to fix this. I don't know what are the ohms of the speakers. It seems the receiver is in protection mode.

he took everything off and he unplugged it for an hour. Then he plugged back on, but nothing. According to the manual it says to crank the volume all the way up to see if the receiver stays on. I am not sure if he did that.
