Default DTS-HD Master Audio vs Dolby TrueHD

After ai got the latest releases this month

- Major League (DOLBY True HD)
- Star trek "Movie trillogy" ( (DOLBY True HD)

And some months ago

- Max Payne (DTS Master HD)

Where u have a sound that is a amazing a sound that comes trough the room like u are INSIDE movies.

If u compare the two formats DTS Or Dolby true hd. DTS Is just amazing to any kind of sound it almost blows you out of the seat. But........ Dolby True HD....... whats hd about this anyway.... to me it sounds flat with no life.

So what kan we do to get more studios to use DTS. ?
I want all releases to be DTS.

This again? And you're making your comparison based on 20+ year old movies vs. something less than a year old?

And what discs have you used to make a direct comparison? I can think of plenty DTHD titles that are of outstanding quality.

No offense, I love DTS but I do NOT want to be "inside" Max Payne.

Interesting topic, and its about time that we discuss it on this board.

For those of you that might consider bringing science and reason to this thread, we'd rather not have it.

This is about comparing soundtracks from completly different movies and different studios and different eras, and fighting about how they make us feel.

I think Ironman sounds better than Flyboys, do DTS HDMA is better.

+1 I'm not very impressed with Dolby True HD. DTS MA sounds more like movie-theater sound.

I prefer the DTS flavor mainly because it leaves more space for other stuff. With the DTS Core, there's no need for a companion, lower res track so there's more space for video, extra features, multiple HD res language tracks, single encode for multiple countries, regions, etc. These things add up to me to mean more content with less work, same lossless audio quality and cheaper production costs.

I have excellent gear and am unable to tell the difference between the two save the +db that seems to come with DTS which is easily remedied.

DING DING!

(cue the tall leggy blonde in a bikini)

Round #3184

P.S. DTS HD MA sounds amazingly more realistic and dynamic than TrueHD tracks... even with volume equalization and DRC turned off!!!

I agree that this thread should not be about scientific details. SPEAK YOUR MINDS ON WHAT YOU HEAR!!!

While I have to agree with many of you in saying that Dolby Digital HD is a bit lackluster, it does have it's strong points. As mentioned above, "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is just incredible. However, I prefer the more realistic DTSHD-MA mix on Criterion's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".
Oh, and the "Pinnochio" mix, c'mon people the movie and audio track are 70 years old!! You can not use that as an argument against modern movies. Plus, when you consider the film originally had a mono track, I think the folks at Disney did a pretty outstanding job with what they had to work with.
I dunno, to me as long as it's High quality sound I'm happy.
Hell, the audio on the standard DVD of "Master and Commander" blows a lot of Blu-ray out of the water (pun sort of intended)
If I had to choose, I'm a DTS guy, always have been.

We have discussed this topic many times before. Please read the following threads and stop wasting your time.

PCM is a procedure to convert analog audio to digital. Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD MA are two zipping programs that losslessly convert and compress digital sound. Once decoded and uncompressed, the two codecs yield identical results. On some titles, Dolby TrueHD sounds better. On other titles, DTS HD MA sounds better. On a few titles (e.g., Divertimenti) both codecs sound exactly the same. On many movie and music titles, DTS HD MA is irritatingly louder, not better. The difference is in the mix, not the codec.

Decoded DolbyTrueHD = Decoded DTS HD MA = LPCM

It may not be comparing apples (DTS HD MA) to oranges (TrueHD), but the apples taste much fresher!!!

Strangely enough, on every DTS HD MA audio track the full three dimensional spectrum of the soundtracks are ALWAYS better than every TrueHD audio track. Sure, they aren't the same mixes (which has nothing to do with the encoding for Blu-ray itself), but DTS HD MA ALWAYS sounds better. With the 800+ films that I own between DVD and Blu-ray formats, DTS always sounds better! With the exception of The Dark Knight Blu-ray, which is the only existing TrueHD encode that reaches quality comparison to many other DTS HD MA encodes that I've heard. It shows the TrueHD codec has promise.... or maybe it's just the only mix ever created and encoded with TrueHD that sounds good to me?!?!?!

The point that we are trying to make is that from what we all hear, The best action movies always sound better if they have a DTS HD MA encoded track compared to those encoded with a TrueHD track. Is it just a coincidence that EVERY ACTION FILM WITH TrueHD has poor mixing done on it and EVERY ACTION FILM WITH DTS HD MA has amazing mixing done on it?
