we have two stand alones and two ps3's and I can't tell the difference between any of them in-terms of quality... As for updates, load times ps3 CRUSHEd the stand alones in those. my advice while I've been very impressed with our s550 if you have 399.99 and don't care then get the ps3. They still seem to be the best bang for the buck, and do the best in displaying movies, updating, and loading.

If you are pretty big into gaming on your PS3.... I would think a standalone would be worth considering. It would reduce wear and tear on the optical drive in your PS3. I don't know if the blu drive in the PS3 is actually any more prone to failure than the blu drives in standalone players, but you certainly far more reports about the BD drive going bad in the PS3.

A thread of this sort comes up just about every day on these forums and they tend to get locked.
Anyway,...I put all my eggs in the PS3 basket. It's the only source component I have. It's my everything player and has internet capabilities and media server capabilities. I love the fact that it can play CDs and SACD's (mines the discontinued 60GB version.) A perhaps overlooked benifit of the PS3 is many users have been able to replace the laser inside once it goes bad. All lasers have a finite lifetime by design. My launch day system has no problems yet but I know when the laser fails I can pick up a spare for ~$50 and swap it out. I used to use a HTPC (Home Theater PC) and that's one reason I love the PS3 so much. It's like a HTPC except it's standardized a bit better and never crashes. I have a 500 GB hard drive for my PS3 now and I am filling it up with media content. -Brian |

I've got a 2 PS3s, a Panny BD55, and a Sony S350. I can't tell a difference in the picture. The PS3 is faster at loading, although the BD55 isn't bad either. The S350 is a bit slow. The PS3 does run hotter and use more power than the 2, and my 60 gig PS3 is definitely louder than the stand alones. Also, if you want to bitstream audio so your receiver decodes it rather than the player you'd need something other than a PS3. It's really up to you if it's worth a stand alone player.

PS3 power consumption is 10 times that of the BD35 when watching a movie. PS3 consumes an average of 210watts while watching a blu-ray, while the panny consumes 20watts. PS3 loads hella fast though, firmware updates are fine on both as I have them both online. I use the BD35 for blu-s and DVD's and the PS3 for gaming and streaming media from my PC. DISCLAIMER: Remember the topic here is not which is better, but if it's worth buying a standalone as well as a PS3, so the die hard PS3 defenders need not bunch their undergarments. I do love my PS3 ![]() Last edited by koukikat; 02-26-2009 at 06:58 PM. |

I have A PS3 (60 gig) that I use to game on and watch BD movies. I still use my Oppo 970-HD to watch my DVDs on as I support the notion of taking the wear and tear off the PS3 whenever I can. My PS3 does become noisy when well into the movie or when paused, a minor nuisaince at best for me.
That being said, it is in my interests/wishes to get a standalone and I eagerly await for the Oppo BD player to be released so it can be reviewed. that's the route I plan to go |
