Default PS3 versus standalone BD and HD-DVD player

I was wondering if anyone's done a comparison on the PS3 BD player verses any BD or HD-DVD standalone player. I would think the concensus would be the standalone players for both BD and HD-DVD would out perform the PS3 BD player hands down.

I have a Toshiba A1 HD-DVD and the PS3 (I'm covered no matter which format wins out). I've watched movies on both systems and I have to say overall the Toshiba A1 HD-DVD for me appears to be visually better than what I've seen on the PS3. I'm not an expert but I do feel I have an eye for the obvious. Does anyone agree with what I'm saying. Also does anyone know of an article where a formal comparison has been done?

BTW, I have both systems connected to the HP MD5880N Pavilion 58" DLP.

Can you list some titles you've used for comparison? The content quality does vary widely. For both formats.

The Sony player outputs 1080p/24, so if you can make use of that and your set didn't handle 1080i/60 reverse telecine properly, that would make the Sony stand-alone better. Although I think Sony has said they plan to offer 24p output for the PS/3 as well.

Picture wise, I think the concensus is that the PS/3 delivers a picture at least equal to every stand-alone player. And so the value element kicks in.

A major A/V mag recently ranked the PS/3 ahead of the Samsung and Panasonic players.

Although PS3 verses sound more poetic than standalone verses, I've changed the thread title to versus

It hasn't reached its maximum PQ yet.

With the upcoming firmware updates, the picture quality of the PS3 will continue to improve.

As to when it will max out, we don't yet unfortunately.
