I'm still debating if getting a BD player is warranted. Here's my situation.

I have the original Oppo 971H (from '06) player that still does an excellent job on both audio & video. My Sony TV doesn't have HDMI (DVI & componet) so I know the video portion of BD won't do me any good just yet (I think). The TV still has a fantastic picture so I'm not looking to buy another just for HDMI. Some say you can use a combo cable (HDMI-DVI) but I have my doubts on that one. Is this even an issue I should be concerned about?

My NAD T765 AVR passes video only over HDMI. Still not a problem yet (or is it) because of my TV situation. For the audio portion, I can run analog cables for the new audio formats. So I guess I can only experience the newer audio formats (correct me if I'm wrong here) & wonder if it's really worth it. What do you think? I'm not really up to speed on these new fangled audio/video formats yet. Can't you tell!!!

You can run analog outputs from most players including a new oppo player set to be released at the end of march. This will give you HD audio which is superior to anything your oppo dvd player can do with legacy audio, although I'm sure it does a great job.

As for your television not having an hdmi input, there are other ways to connect your player to the television, component or hdmi-to-dvi, that will still give you the benefit of the 6x greater resolution of a blu-ray disc versus a dvd. Even on non-1080p televisions that difference is easily noticeable.

Does your AVR have 7.1 analog audio inputs?
If the answer is "yes" then getting a BDP that has 7.1 analog outputs, decodes both dts HD-MA and Dolby TrueHD and has component out (I assume your HDTV is a 720p with component inputs) would make a perfect solution.

Also if your AVR only has 5.1 analog audio inputs you can still do this but you wont get the full effect of a 7.1 audio track.

Later on you can upgrade the HDTV to a 1080p and maybe the AVR if you wish.

As far as Blu-ray being worth it for you, that is a personal question that only you can answer, but with your current HDTV you'd really be doing the upgrade to take advantage of a drastic increase in your audio enjoyment.

first off, as for picture quality, HDMI = DVI , except DVI only transfers a video singal, and HDMI transfers both a video AND sound signal. So when using a HDMI - DVI combo cable, you are only sending video through that cable, no sound

also, DVI will give you 1080p
component will top out at 720p (or 1080i, for those that insist on stating that worthless resolution)

the increase in picture quality on your TV will still be big
sound,

as for analog sound wires, try to use digital coax (i'll never understand why they call it digital coax, because it is an analog wire)

Well you're NAD have 7.1 Channel Inputs. So get either the S550 from Sony or BD55 from Panasonic and connect it via 7.1 analog (or 5.1 if you're in 5.1) and you'll get the Loseless Codec. (both those BR player decode in analog).

For you're tv. If it's a 1080i Tv you can the component out from a Blu-ray player.

I'm going to be one of those jerks who doesn't look at the other replies to see if someone's given you the exact same answer, but just getting this far I can't see anything stopping you from getting a BD player. Component cables will give you an excellent HD picture, and you can use HDMI for the audio to the receiver. Or, as you said, find a player that has analog outs and use those instead.

I have the 971H too! Great DVD player.

It looks like I'm good to go. I just need a BD player that does all of the decoding & has analog outs. And I can either use an HDMN/DVI combo cable or componet to my TV. Thanks for the info.

The new Oppo looks promising. And the Sony & Panny units seem to get high marks also.

I'd recommend waiting to check out the release of the new Oppo, since you've waited this far. I just read the first user test review of it yesterday, and the player looks incredible. The on-screen menus and options were top notch, it has 7.1 analog outputs, SACD and DVD-A playback, placing it with the upcoming Denon as a more universal player than the PS3.

I'm seriously considering the Oppo as a second Blu-ray player for my 2 channel setup.
