Default Stoopid Newb Needs Help... Please???

Ok, I have a BD Sony BDP-S550 going into a Sony STR-DG820 receiver via hdmi, going out of the hdmi output into the dvi input if my Sony Grand Wega. I can't get any sound from the Blu-Ray..... my digital cable sound is fine, just no sound on the BD. I've spent what little time I have reading the instructions but...... I'm sure there's an answer posted already about this combo, but with a 2 month old baby my goof-off time has decreased at a rapid rate & I don't have time to search all the treads.

Anyway, thank you in advance, and anyone that can help me is invited over to my house (Chicago, SOUTHSIDE) for a steak dinner - my wife is one hell of a cook!!!

Thanks,
Chris

Ah, sorry... no airfare - I'm jobless, just being Mr. Mom for right now. I'm embarrased since at one point I was on top of my game as far as setting this stuff up. But I'm kind of a "set it and forget it" (it's been a few years) guy, I'm now paying the price...

double check your settings on your blu-ray player. In the audio settings, make sure HDMI is selected under Audio Output Priority. I'm about 5 hours from Chicago...see you soon.

I am not sure of this answer, so I will throw it out there for at least my own understanding...but would the DVI input on the TV have any effect on the sound from the receiver's HDMI out? Anyone?

DVI will only carry a video signal, no audio. This would make it so that he won't be able to get the audio coming through the tv speakers, which we usually don't care about anyways. My HTPC for instance is DVI output, so I have to run a coax cable SPDIF output into my receiver to get the audio when watching movies save on my HD.

...I haven't dealt with DVI for so long, that I basically blanked on this one. Thanks liquidice.

By the way, I think it may have something to do with the HDMI setting on the player as well.

Gentlemen.... I've gone through the manuals for my receiver & bd player, still no luck. I'm under the conclusion that either I have a broken component or I'm just plain out of the loop & stupid.....

PS: I did get the test tones to work perfectly.

Chris
If your TV only has DVI, then you need a separate audio connection for the PS3. The HDMI from the PS3 cannot carry audio to the TV's DVI socket as DVI is video only.

Steaks for JT! Well, assuming you're using the TV speakers. If so... why do you have a receiver? If you have speakers hooked up to your receiver, I'd assume it's actually just a case of the wrong input assignments- it might be "listening" to a different input for the audio. Alternatively it might be that you don't have your player set to output audio via HDMI. My guess is the latter.

The audio is sent to the receiver.

On most receivers, you set it to "AMP", "Hdmi Audio Out = Off" etc. Different methods for different brands.

But I have seen more and more cases with these Sony receivers, they don't play nice when the Hdmi out is to a DVI input.

Other receivers, they work properly.

First of all, thank you to you guys for the help.

Secondly, Crackinhedz... I don't understand why the hdmi/dvi cable would effect the sound coming out of the amp if I'm not using the hdmi audio out of the receiver.

You know, I should have kept up on this stuff over the years.... believe it or not I used to be "the man" setting this stuff up.

it shouldn't affect the sound.

But I have seen a couple of Sony STR-DG owners who have trouble when using an HDMI-DVI connection.

upon further looking, it mentions in the user manual (pg.24):

Quote:
"we do not recommend using an HDMI-DVI conversion cable. When you connect an HDMI-DVI conversion cable to a DVI-D component, the sound and/or image may not be output."
