Default PS3 Problem

The main reason I own a PS3 is to use it as a BD player, though my wife and I do have some PS3 games as well.

Anyway, I've owned one since November 2007 (basically 1.5 years). We keep it very clean and have never dropped it. We don't leave it on when we're not using it, etc. We've never had any issued with it until recently.

I don't know if it matters, but the night before this issue began I did a recommended update with no apparent problems. The next morning I watched some of a Planet Earth episode before turning it off to go to work. Later that night we watched about 70 minutes of a Netflix movie. Suddenly the film sped up on its own and then froze. I tried to fast forward. Nothing. I tried to skip ahead. It just showed blackness. I even had trouble ejecting the disc. Turned off the system altogether for a few minutes and tried putting one of the Planet Earth discs in instead. It played for about 7 minutes and then did the same thing. We put the original movie we'd been watching back in, skipped ahead one chapter in the menu, and it worked for maybe 6 or 7 minutes, then sped up and froze again.

Has anyone had a problem similar to this one? Apparently the player is no longer under warranty. I've been meaning to phone their tech people again and see what my next option is, but I never get home early enough.

Don't worry, you are not alone.

Do some reading on the laser replacement section. So far it sounds like your laser is going bad. Do some of the testing that I suggest in order to see if thats the case.

IE: It plays CDs/DVDs/ normally.
