The PS3 is in what I would call a normal mini rack situation.
On the top of minirack/stand is the Sony 40XBR4 LCD. One shelf below it with a good three inches plus of shelf and wood seperating the TV and the PS3 and an additional 2-3 inches of "empty air." In other words: A fairly typical mini rack situation. The shelves are open on all sides. You can feel the heat coming off of this PS3 and the thermometer/thermostat that's on the same wall 6 feet away registers a good 2 degree temperature increase in the room when that PS3 is on for a little while. At first, I thought the LCD was creating all that heat. It is not. Certainly not all by itself. The PS3 in this room is putting out a heck of a lot of heat. I find it hard to believe that this PS3 isn't properly ventilated but perhaps I'm wrong. I understand that all electronics put out a certain amount of heat, but this strikes me as somewhat excessive. This PS3 can be used for several hours at a time and I have yet to see any of the overheating warnings or symptoms described in the manual. More specifically: The PS3 being referred to here was purchased a few months ago when it was announced that the 60 gig versions were being discontinued. It was purchased when that price cut happened. There is a second PS3 in the house. This one was purchased on launch day. I notice that the launch day PS3 is a little quieter and puts out less heat than this "newer" PS3 does. This newer PS3 almost flirts with 360 territory on fan noise and heat. There are also some minor aesthetic differences. The "newer" PS3 is more boxy in appearance whereas the launch day PS3 has a few more curves. They're both 60 gigers. The launch day PS3 that's not in question here is in a virtually identical "mini rack" shelf situation. This newer PS3 that is in question is noticeably louder and puts out more heat. Did Sony make some kind of changes even on these 60 gigers that I need to know about or do I have some other kind of problem here? I'm almost 100 percent convinced there is no ventilation problem here. What I suspect is happening here is that the LCD puts off a little bit of heat and the PS3 puts off a little bit of heat and it's probably a normal situation and that stupid thermostat/thermometer is too close and sensitive. I'm not really alarmed by any of it but I just wanted to run this by all of you and see what you thought. ![]() Last edited by JTK; 12-08-2007 at 03:47 PM. |

I've gone back and forth between both rooms and there's a slight sound difference and what I feel is a fairly close and comparable heat output issue. I suspect I'm picking nits here. ![]() I'll bet the PS3 combined with that XBR4 LCD is what's happening in that second room in terms of heat. If all is well, then I just need to figure out how to maybe cool things off more or something. Last edited by JTK; 12-08-2007 at 03:54 PM. |

Since you have two PS3s, how hard can it be to swap them and see if you get the same issue? My PS3 is an after-launch 60 gigger too but it spits out heat mighty normal to me. I can tell that the exhaust fan is always busy and changes speed once in a while. The fan noice is not that loud and it never bothers me.

I'm sure these 60 GB PS3s aren't plauged with any issues what so ever as they work great in terms of performance utilization, however they're distinctly diverse aurally emphasised on fan noise.
Back in March when the PS3 was launched in Europe I bought one and it varied between 3 fan levels, first of which subdued whereas the latter of which yielded a very subtle fan noise amidst the backround, hard to perceive, and the third level you could discern there was a fan noise being emitted from the PS3. Thus, I brought it back and demanded my money back and I decided to wait. All of these gears had their own volume of noise soleley for each PS3, some of which were very loud, like a hair dryer, lol (there are lots of youtube movies out there). Some PS3s are as quiet as level 1 without augmented fan noise. I don't know if Sony has altered the components inherent in their console, or if they have made any reimplementations but it seems as if they have, because they're distincly distinguishable. I got a PS3 a few weeks ago (60 gb Starter Pack), same phenomena presented, I am yet to decide what to do but the noise doesn't bother me at all, consequently I can't make any conclusions whether it's defected or not and Sony haven't designated anything about this. Those who thinks their PS3s are off while it's on, you guys are lucky ![]() |

I believe it is the mini rack situation thats creating heat from all the electronics and the PS3 is trying to cool off so extra speed on the fans. I also set my PS3 on an enclosed rack and when I'm playing BD or games it gets a little loud esp. if the temperature in the room is warm but if I take it out and stand it vertically letting more air flow than it is quiet.

Turning off Remote Play will not give you any problems. I think it was always on my default. If you are not using your PSP with it, then turn it off. Make sure you have Firmware 2.01.

either :
1)you're paranoïd or 2)your PS3 is defective since you have 2 PS3s, ask someone of your family to make this test : they exchange your PS3s without your knowledge some times in the week (they have to keep track which PS3 is in which room at which time), the trick is you don't know when and if a change was made ... hope it helps |

I have noticed a lot of heat and occasionally(varies with FW updates) the fan noise is noticeable and annoying. I noticed that standing my ps3 vertically as opposed to horizontally, the heat dissapates much quicker and therefore the fans don't run as hard as long. I've noted a full degree & a half difference between the two positions. And the ps3 alone can raise the temp in my room up to 4 degrees in the horizontal position.
Just FYI my ps3 is a 20giger from January just after they launched. MAC |

Ever think about buying a thermometer from home depot to check temperatures directly? With the PS3 and TV on and with TV only on or with PS3 only on. Then compare it to your second PS3. The normal highest operating temp according to the manual is 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
I personally have my PS3 in a horizontal position inside an entertainment cabinet and it gets really loud but I have done a lot of experiments with it using the said thermometer and it never got above 90 degrees even during the hottest days of summer here in vegas where my room temp goes up to 80. |

Well my PS3 heats up the room if I leave it on for like 6-8 hours on something intensive like folding@home or playing something constantly on it. The room it's usually in is 14x13
I like it though because when its 32 degrees outside it's nice the room is like 10 degrees warmer than other rooms in the house ![]() |

In general, more often than not yes.

The thermostat in the room is notoriously oversensitive to begin with. I can make some adjustments to end that problem. Quote:

I just thought I'd throw this out there...
During the summer, on one of the hotter days, I checked my PS3's internal temperature with a heat gun (an infrared/laser) that I use to spot check for potential fires on the job site. Temperature outside was in the mid 30 degree celsius range (I'm not sure about my conversions, but I'm guessing high 90s to low 100s farenheit). I stand my PS3 vertically, there is no obstructing surface above the vents (unless you count the ceiling), and more than adequate ventilation at the back and sides. When I pointed my gun at (and through) the vents on the top of the PS3 (when standing vertically, so the ones on the side if horizontal) and back, I was registering temperatures of 150 degrees farenheit, and 90-100 degrees farenheit respectively. My PS3 has been turned off, MAYBE, a dozen times since folding@home was launched, with the longest being roughly half a day, and the average being an hour per occassion. My PS3 has not quit yet (this thing is a beast), and during those hot days the fan on the unit was probably at it's loudest. As it is now wintertime and the temperature outside has been -15 celsius (-25 with windchill) lately, my PS3 has been whisper quiet and still running 24/7. I hope this is some kind of reassurance for you that your PS3 is fine (this machine really is something else). BTW, my PS3 is a launch 20GB (upgraded to 100GB). |
