Plasmas in that price range you cited will make you cry. Steer clear.

I'd steer you towards the 50 inch Sony LCOS SXRD a2000, but that's depending on whether you can stretch your budget or not.

Basically, you want to stick to top brands like Sony, Sharp, Pioneer Elite (not sure they have anything in your budget range here), Panasonic, JVC...obvious big names like that.

I hope you wait as long as you can possibly stand it because then you will be able to take advantage of holiday sales and things of that nature.

VIZIO is a "brand X" and far far inferior. You hear those rumors of plasmas burning out fast? Exactly the type.

Another vote for Sony's SXRD. Rock solid blacks. True 1080p. Wider viewing angle, 5000:1 dynamic contrast, 2 HDMI & 1 VGA input. Fast (2ms) pixel response time. Simply the BEST TV for its price range.

The nearest alcohol bottle is the quick fix for that!

We thought about buying a HDTV recently. Does anyone know how long it'll be before HDTV becomes the standard? We don't want to get one whilst SDTV means that the SD quality will look bad.

I know that Sky is starting to support HD.

According to the specs that were posted from the 1080i test the models of this one as of August 2006 will pass both tests too. It's a really nice model.

Yup. It's one of the few sets out there that "does it all well."

Shoot, for $2500 MSRP for the 50? I don't think it gets much better than that, IMO.

I have a slightly different question to ask you guys, but it still fits under this topic.

I would like to know if there are any 1080p RPTV that will accept and display a 1080p/24 signal under $6000. As far as front projectors I know the VPL-VW50 will accept and display a 1080p/24 signal, but I can't find a RPTV that lists that it can. HELP!!!!

In addition to the Sony A2000 SXRD models, you might consider the new Mitsubishi 732 1080p DLP, or Samsung 1080p DLP units. I would be very happy with those, or the Sony SXRD. The only concern I would have re the Sony is the color uniformity problems that they have had. Make sure you purchase from an reputable/authorized dealer in case you need warranty work.

I would highly recommend the 2nd Gen SXRD LOCS displays. I just got the KDS-R60XBR2 about two weeks ago. It's predecessor was Home Theater Magazine's product-of-the-year last year. The main difference from last year's model is that the XBR2's accept 1080p w/3 HDMI inputs. I just upgraded from my old 65" Mits CRT and it's pure heaven.

I knew they could take a 1080p signal, but I didn't know they could accept 1080p/24fps. I will check this out. Thanks!

Nice price, but it doesn't accept a 1080p/24 source.
