I had started a post earlier seeking a decent receiver for my poor student self. A lot was recommended and the Sony STR-DG720 seemed like a good idea. Unfortunately, since that's an old model, it is pretty tough to find new or from a trusted site.
I was wondering how the new model, the STR-DH700 compares? I am just looking for a repeater (the PS3 will handle the audio) and lossless sound. I am a total amateur with audio though, so this stuff is just difficult for me to find and understand. Thanks! |

Not really.
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665788590 The Sony STR-DH700 has a power rating of 105W x 7 ( 1khz, 1.0% THD ) @ 8 ohms. It is under powered, will probably only get 30W per channel, all channels driven. Has a high THD & the power rating was taken at 1khz instead of the full audible frequency range of (20Hz - 20kHz). Beware of receiver power ratings like this Sony. http://us.marantz.com/Products/2513.asp A better choice for you would be the Marantz SR4003. It has a power rating of 80W x 7 (20Hz - 20kHz) 0.08 THD @ 8 ohms. It will put out close to what it is rated at with all channels driven across the full frequency range of (20Hz-20kHz). " It’s relatively easy to find a low powered or feature-short receiver in our competitors’ product lines. But that’s a concept we simply don’t believe in at Marantz. Instead, our SR4003 offers a full 80 watts/channel across the full audio spectrum into 8 ohm loads with less than 0.08 Total Harmonic Distortion. That‘s “separate component” performance territory! We get there with a power supply specifically developed to deliver high instantaneous current when signals get really demanding. The high capacity, low-loss EI core transformer feeds a capacitor array rated at over 16,000 µfarads so the amplifier section never ends up gasping for breath. You might – but that’s because the performance is so outstanding. " from Marantz.com Last edited by ZIPPO; 06-13-2009 at 10:41 PM. |

Zippo is right, I used to have the 710 model Sony and when I got the 920 it was a whole new reciever, the power supply was bigger and there was definetly more power going out to the speakers, I would avoid the 800 and below(they all use the same power supply), the 920 was a stripped down ES2400. I would still say that the 920 prolly pushes about 55-75 watts/ch of the 110 watts they claim, when driving more then 2 channels. But the Yamaha 663/863 is only pushing 42/47 watts per channel too, so don't believe what you read all the time. Even when they are 20-20K Hz rated. The Onkyo 706 is pushing 77 watts/ch w/ 5 or more, so you cant just think you are getting 105 wpc from the DH700. You are prolly better off getting a Marantz like he said or saving up for a Denon.
