Smile Help/advice needed

Hi, complete newby here (UK based) and looking to buy first blu-ray player/recorder?
Would appreciate any advice.

I am only interested in watching/recording movies and sport (not into gaming).

I have SKY HD giving movies and sport in HD (I believe 1080i). I have just ordered the new 42" 1080p Panasonic TV.

Do Panasonic had a blu-ray player/recorder? If not who does? Can I record from Sky in HD?

Are the players Region specific or can I buy (and play) movies from US?

Thanks for any help

There is no Blu-ray player with recording capabilities yet.

Some movies are region-specific, and some aren't, so I think it's going to be a movie-by-movie basis for UK region coding (the regions are different).

If you want a standalone (not a PS3) player, I would suggest the Sony BDSP-300, but I don't know if you can get it in the UK.

See here: http://crave.cnet.co.uk/dvdpvr/0,390...9288318,00.htm

I'd get the PS3, even if I wasn't a gamer, with the only reason for not getting a PS3 being the noise from the PS3 fans. That, I know you can get in the UK.

Another good choice would be the Panasonic:

Thanks for the quick replies.

Do you know if there is likely to be a blu-ray player with recording capability in the near future?

I just took a look on the Sony UK website. Why is the PS3 priced at (£399 including extras) against a price of £695 for the blu-ray player? Is there a significant quality difference between the two for watching a movie?

No TV-based recorders are currently available outside of Japan.

All players are region-specific. It's optional for the movies themselves.

I haven't seen any stand alone blu-ray players for a decent price yet. If you want a blu-ray player right now, you are better off buying a PS3. Some stand alone players are a little better than the PS3, but not enough to justify the price difference. You can either pay a ton for a stand alone player that doesn't do anything but play BDs, or you can pay about half as much and get a BD player AND something that will play games, enable you to download content like movie trailers (one day probably whole movies), etc. Good luck.
