Default Question about "Do The Right Thing"

I have never seen this movie before, nor am I a big fan of Spike Lee (i like some of his movies, but dislike him)

however after reading the review here on blu-ray.com im kind of interested in seeing this movie, but i have a question

I understand that this movie is 100% revolved around racial issues and race relations, but is it presented in an overblown, in your face kinda way? similar to "Crash"

I know a lot of people like Crash (i think it even won best picture) but i personally hated it. I thought the movie was blowing racial issues so far out of proportion just to be controversial and/or give the film some purpose. It was nothing more than a couple of hours of "everyone hates eachother and this is what the world is like" blah blah

thoughts?

I've saw this movie several times and I currently have it pre-ordered on Amazon. I guess the 1st question I'll ask you is if you're a Spike Lee fan? Personally, I'm a fan of his earlier releases (Do The Right Thing, She's Gotta Have It, School Daze, He Got Game). So this movie would fit in that category.

It is similar to Crash in a sense as far racial issues and relations from everyone and not just from an African American perspective. It has more humor and doesn't tell multiple stories the way Crash did. I think its a better movie than Crash no doubt and its a classic 80's movie. I would recommend it.

im really hit or miss on Spike Lee Movies, and havent seen his more popular ones

I loved Summer Of Sam, Inside Man, 25th hour

havent seen miracle at St anna yet, i love ww2 movies but the controversy surrounding that movie really put a bad taste in my mouth

im ok with movies based on racial issues (i love john singletons work like higher learning, etc) there was just something about crash that really turned me off

if this is slightly more comedic than i might like it better i suppose. I guess i just hated every single character in crash so much, the director made me despise all of them

I wasnt really feeling Crash the way others did as well. As far as Miracle in St. Anna I actually liked it. I don't know if I'd watch it again but besides the controversy surrounding it, it wasn't a terrible movie in any sense IMO.

Try renting DTRT first before purchasing, like you said and I'll agree Spike Lee can be a hit or miss. But this movie was a hit for me. Hope that helps!

well, i just didnt like how he attacked eastwood (who is awesome) about not having black people in his iwo jima movie, i just thought he was throwing out the race card as usual

that made me not want to support his movie in theatres

but im a huge ww2 buff so i suppose i owe it to myself to see it

It's an important movie and worth watching at least once.

As you probably know from the review, you are thrust into a tough neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY called Bedford Stuyvesant. For most of the film, the narrative isn't clearly moving in any particular direction and may or may not keep your interest depending on how much you like Lee's work. I happen to like it. But late in the film, it snaps into focus and grabs your attention regardless of how you felt about it up to that point. If you watch how and why the violence erupts and what Spike Lee's character does to focus the violence on a particular place, rather than person, the message of the film becomes clear and it's quite a statement.

To me, Miracle a St Anna was just terrible, I couldn't get past the 45 min mark and I turned it off.

Default Way Different from Crash

I also disliked Crash, but Do the Right Thing is light years better.

The story takes place in cronological order, and there is a central plot, rather than several loosely related stories.

It's more similar to Jungle Fever than any other Spike Lee movie.

I liked it because the acting was very good, the plot was well written, the characters were believable, and Rosey Perez shows her nipples.

Before buying it, you may want to read a plot summary online. But it absolutely doesn't compare to Crash. The two are totally dissimilar.

This movie is nothing like Crash, not even in the same ballpark. The beautiful part about Do The Right Thing is that it shows the racial tensions of people living in the same neighborhood and how invariably they must co-exist and get beyond the general stereotypes the people in the neighborhood perceive of each other. Crash seemed to draw more on the issues of social class. The casting of the movie is spot on, Ossie Davis and Danny Aiello are superb. It is definitely worth a rent, it might not be for you but you will never know unless you check it out.

well now that you have asked everyone to dissect the **** out of it you don't need to really watch it anymore do you?

it's just a movie, if it interests you a little bit then just watch it and then discuss it.

You actually sound afraid of it in the original post. there is still something to be said about going into a movie knowing nothing or little about it.

This.

Do the Right Thing, like many of Lee's films, is very in your face. But it's much more layered and challenging than the simplified piece of garbage that is Crash.

I say that if you like any of Lee's films, you'll be certain to like it VERY much.
