Question Everyone excited for the digital transition in a few hours

Just a question. I have Time Warner Cable and when they switch off the analogue channels are they adding and new channels to the line up? Especially any new HD channels? I just did an online chat to confirm the transition took place and he confirmed it did but, when I scanned for channels on my Vizio in the bedroom it came up 77 analog and 36 digital. What's up with that? I've had digital cable in the house already so, why is there still more analog channels than digital? Anyone else experience similar problem?

Comcast = same thing

They took channels off analog a little while ago and there are more digital channels when scanning using the QAM tuner but there are a lot of dups in those channels.

I'm anxious to see what it picks up tonight after the complete switch happens as I still have a non-digital ready tv just picking up the analog in the clear stations. I might be removing a tv from the bedroom tonight because I don't want to pay for any access fees or converter boxes in addition to what I already pay them (over $150/month)

But who knows, they might keep some channels down-converted into analog for the time being - all I know is that we STILL don't have FX HD and the FX we do have is in the analog tier...time for them to step up and get it going!

I'm on Knology and I've noticed they added more HD channels. My samsung tv found more digital channels the other day with just a straight out the tap wall connection (no box).

This changeover doesn't really affect me negatively though as I have no TV's on an antenna.

some areas stuck with the Feb date but a lot of areas opted to go to June 12 because Obama got congress to free up more funding for the $40 coupons

Gotta generate ad revenue and keep viewership high!!

ah, i see. yeah my area stayed w/the feb. date, the only real issue my area had was our local fox channel, their HD Ant. broke and made a official switch a week later.

I would love to see the stats on how many millions of people this affects, positively or negatively. I would guess that those with pre-existing digital subscriptions are a very small percentage of the TV-watching population. I know this will affect a few people I know; grandma comes to mind first.

i cant believe they pushed it back the first time, the best way to get everyone to switch is to have a solid deadline and if they dont, tv doesnt work, theyll switch REALLY fast

I think I'm going to run a new search with my TV because they added in several HD channels that my TV recognized so I'm hoping for more

I just did another scan on my Vizio in the bedroom(hooked up by via Time Warner cable line from wall to tv) and it is still coming up 77 analog and 35 digital. I thought all the channels should be registered as digital or at least more digital than analog but, analog is still outnumbering by more than 2:1 ??? Anyone else having similar problems? I just did a chat and the agent is telling me that they'll show up as analog but, will be in digital if that makes sense.

Don't worry, grandma will be getting a completely new entertainment center/shelf custom-built by yours truly. She will also quite likely get a new digital HDTV (although probably a cheap one).

I agree with you completely. I'm kind of a stickler for rules, though. I'm the toughass parent between me and my wife, and I'm sure I'll be the "get off my lawn" old man when that time comes.

Cable is cable. It closed-circuit broadcasts how it likes. Digital SDTV was analog broadcasts converted to digital. Now the analog spectrum is digital broadcasts downconverted to analog.

This is why those public service messages said people with cable won't be affected.

Digital station -> cableco -> analog signal on cable -> analog tuner in TV
Digital station -> cableco -> digital set-top box -> analog output

OTA Digital is 8VSB while most cableco use QAM (carries double to data rate as 8VSB in the same 6 MHz wide channel).

Gary

Same here. Same with many, I presume. It'll be interesting to see the news over the next few days about what's going on. I wonder if people will start to buy into HDTVs a little more now.

Here's an article with some figures.
