Default Is blu-ray suppose to look like this?

Hi,
I have a sony blu-ray player and a Samsung HDTV. The picture quality is so crisp it looks flat and disturbingly like a day time soap opera. More like video than film than I've ever seen. Do I need to calibrate my TV or download new firmware for the player or is this what BLu-ray is suppose to look like? I've been hearing this more than a few times from friends about their set ups too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS!!!

You should most definately calibrate your TV if you haven't done so. You can do it yourself using a variety of commercially available discs or get a professional to do it for you.

What movies or HDTV programs are you watching that gives you this impression?

Welcome to the site, pentepug.

Without a lot of explanation now, if your Samsung TV has "Auto Motion Plus" as a menu feature, turn it off for the input you have your Blu-ray player hooked up to. See if that help ya!

Default I'll start there.

Thanks a lot, both of you! I'll start with the calibration and check on the motion option. I was getting worried that maybe companies were taking liberties during the transfer process. Over doing it with the crispness and colors, over-exemplifying that blu-ray is HD to the point that the film no longer luster. I was watching FULL METAL JACKET tonight and we had to turn it off. I have a copy of it on DVD. I'll pop that in and see if there's a difference. Either way I'll follow your advice, both. But I have to ask, have you noticed what I'm describing in any transfers?
Thanks again!!!!

not sure what you're what you're experiencing with Full Meta Jacket.... there are two versions...... either way... the transfer on the new release is excellent, and and the image is much better and the details should be apparent from the DVDs available now.

That's very reassuring. THANKS! I'll try the 2 suggestions in hopes it remedies my issue. If it works I'll have to pass this info on to a few friends of mine who have the same problem. One question. Can you recommend a movie that you feel is a really good example of the blu-ray experience so I can make a comparison?

I personally like the 3d effect, I'm so use to it that I have a problem watching other peoples sets because they aren't as sharp.

I guess it could be that my Samsung is so much better than their tv's. ROTHFLMAO

It's definitely the auto-motion plus. I play with this from time to time when I decide I want that kind of picture, (usually when I watch Planet Earth). It is very real looking, as if the glass as been removed the television and you are sitting in the audience. I like it, but at the same time its very strange because it removes that polished movie look. Sometimes I can't make up my mind.

My advise turn off the Auto Motion Plus. Second this is why I dont like 120hz and Auto Motion Plus. To me it makes movies look to fake and to cartoonish. I watched Planet Earth the other day on my 60hz HDTV and I was blown away.

But again turn off the Auto Motion Plus and that should solve your problem.

the 120hz has nothing to do with the auto motion plus really, it keeps ur LCD from having ghosting of the images during fast pace scenes or watching sports.....its a misconception

auto motion plus is its own entity....

planet earth really wouldnt have any benefits from 120hz but you would notice a difference during a fast paced action scene

Hey dgator,

If 120hz is supposed to keep your LCD from having ghosting of images during fast paced scenes or watching sports then why doesnt my tv have that problem even when its only 60hz? You seem to be a guy who knows his stuff so this is why I ask. I have watched alot of sports and movies with fast paced scenes and I dont see any blurr or judder. In fact I have watched Planet Earth dozens of times and havent seen it.

We'll let dgator give you the real answer, but I'm going to guess it has to do with the quality of your TV. I have a Sony KDL-52XBR2 (60hz?) and I have never noticed blurr or judder, but aparrently some sets are prone to it.

I havent noticed it at all I on my tv as a matter of fact and I watch alot of sports and movies. Maybe my set just aint prone to the motion blurr/judder problem.

Just because you dont notice motion blur doesn't mean it isn't there...........because on most non-LED backlit LCDs, it usually is.

PS- If you were to put your set next to a quality Panny Plasma, you'd probably notice the blur on your set immediately.

Exactly. When I said the quality of your tv, what I meant to say is the quality of one's tv.

I guess. I've just never noticed it in 3 years of owning my tv. Not saying it doesn't exist - since so many people have seen it - I just haven't seen it. Now one thing that definitely doesn't exist that so many people would swear otherwise is that kind of dot painting where you stare long enough and see a ship or something. Those things are total BS!!!!!
