Default Questions about the OPPO BDP83

I am currently trying to decide on a new Blu Ray player and I have narrowed my two choices between a OPPO BDP83 and a Denon DBP 2010CI. I was wondering if anyone has any comparisions between these two players. I use the analog outs for my audio to my rotel and I was also wondering if the OPPO's analog out is comparable to the Denon's. I am currently using a Sony BDPS550... How much of a upgrade would either of these players be to the Sony? Thanks for all advice or opinions.

My equipment is:

Mitsubishi HC6800 projector
110" SI screen
Arcam FMJ CD36 CD Player
Sony BDPS550 Blu Ray Player
Rotel RSP1068 Surround Sound Processor
Rotel RMB1075 5 Channel Amp
DirecTV HD/DVR Box
B & W 803D fronts
B & W Nautilus HTM1 center
B & W DM601 rears

I know nothing about the Denon but I did upgrade to the OPPO form the same Sony player and it is definitely worth the money. The OPPO, of course, plays pretty much everything SACD,DVD-A etc.), but I primarily bought it because of PQ since I just bought a new 65" Panasonic plasma for my theater. I have had an OPPO 983H dvd player which, I think, is easily one of the best, if not the best, upscaling players out there. DVD's I played on the 983 looked amazing. The 83 has the same chipset as the 983 and I swear that dvds look a little better playing on the 83. so that is a plus. As for blu-ray, the PQ is outstanding. I liked the Sony a lot but the picture the OPPO produces is so film-like I sometimes think I'm actually AT the movies. Paired with the plasma, it looks great. Plus I haven't had any problems whatsoever with the unit which was incredibly easy to set up(the Sony was fairly easy also, but getting the audio set-up correctly was a bit tricky, needed help from owners posting over at AVS). (nice that OPPO also includes an HD blu-ray set-up disc AND and audio set-up disc). As for audio, the Sony sounded great using the multi-channel analogs but the OPPO does take the HD codecs up a step, as far as I'm concerned. I'm not an expert by any stretch, but the sound field definitely sound richer, with more depth. very enveloping. I bought the Sony because I got a large discount (saved $150.00) after waiting for blu-ray technology to mature a bit and was glad I got it. Decided to pursue the OPPO after reading about what it could do and after watching a few demos on a friend's unit, I was sold. there is a thread over at AVSforum.com comparing the two units and this was the only discussion I found:
Denon DBP-2010CI vs Oppo BDP-83
I have spent about the past two weeks comparing these two head to head. I picked up my Denon for about $100 less than what the Oppo costs from Oppo direct. I will throw that in solely for the value equation i tend to see as critical in most A/B discussion.

My Oppo has been my primary player in my setup since its arrival in April (2nd EAP). Its functionality and SD DVD performance are terrific and I enjoy its speed in operation and loading (I do sadly have the 12 second eject version).

My Denon arrived not long ago and I have been comparing the two connected over analogues to my Onkyo 906. The HDMI output is run directly to my 50" kuro.

After a reasonable period of time comparing numerous DVDs and BDs, I keep returing to the Denon in larger part due to the audio. The Cirrus Logic DACs in the Oppo are more than compotent, but do not quite offer the same experience the Denon's burr browns offer. The denon has the same burr browns in the fabled Onkyo 805.

While the Denon is slower and does not offer nearly the bells and whistles the Oppo does, it does offer a SD DVD upconverted image that appears in realworld content to be identical to the Oppo 99% of the time (I have a 50" display and YMMV). The Denon more than makes up for the difference in its audio section. Dialogue and loud action sequences are richer and fuller from the Denon. For a reference point, I would put them in the same category as the Wolfsons in the Pioneer 51.

All in all and SACD and DVDA playback aside, my point is the Denon 2010 is the most serious direct competitor to the Oppo when priced appropriately ($400-$430) for pure BD and SD DVD playback. Denon could learn a lot from the thoughtful design of the Oppo's GUI and Oppo could pick up some pointers from the Denon's audio section.

These two are a great pair to compare for individual needs - proverbial BMW M5 vs Mercedes E63 AMG that is largely descided by personal preference. Denon just needs to get realistic about pricing in a post-Oppo world (that is probably the greatest complement I can pay the Oppo as a true category definer).

Thanks so much for the info. If Denon can compare to the OPPO in PQ quality (Slower loading times doesn't really bother me) and the audio thru the analogs is better then the Denon may end up being my route.

Was the OPPO a vast improvement over the Sony 550?

I had the Oppo blu-ray player, i brougth day 1 in public release. And installed the region free crack which now work any region of dvd and blu-ray. Only problem is i can't update at this point since there's no new crack patch come out for new version.

Pro.
Very high quality player (from player to even the cables)
Comes with HDMI Cables, Calibration Disk, a Oppo logo Bag
The speed is as fast as PS3, fastest stand alone blu-ray player out there
Many option for adjustment
Excellent upscale especially in noise video
Show video bit rate
Backlit remote
7.1 audio component
SACD support
Good selection of media support (MKV, AVi etc..)

Con.
I had problem with other device remote control oppo.
The led info screen could had been better, white text is hard to see.
No audio bitrate (ps3 show audio and video bit rate)
No wifi build in
No Youtube, Netflix etc..
Media playback is fat32 only which don't play file larger than 4gb has to be split
MKV subtile issue is a bit too small.

Conclustion you get what you paid for, but to be hornest ps3 slim will a bit smarter choice if you do not have a ps3 yet. Since is only cost 300 (200 less than oppo) offer almost as good pq as Oppo. But it has tons other feature like play latest hd games, build in wifi, web browser, also play some media file, a much better picture view software than oppo.

You can't compare the PS 3 to the Oppo or Denon players... PS3 plays Bu-ray, mainly ...is a gamming machine , boost and load BD disc faster than most BD players ... On the other side, the Oppo and Denon are the universal players and folks who have DVD-A and SACD discs will benefit from them very much ...plus they're also very good, top rated BD players...

I owned a PS3 already and sold it.. not a big gamer .... I am looking for a quality stand alone player that provides excellent pq and aq (thru analog). I really don't even care about SACD. I have a Arcam stand alone CD player. Plus I think have maybe two SACD's. Upconversion on SDVD's is a plus but if there is a 10% difference between two players on that then it comes down to audio quality. For the price though one can't go wrong with a PS3.

Was the OPPO a vast improvement over the Sony 550?
For me, it was about 90% My plan was always to finally upgrade from my RPTV to a 65" plasma and wanted a blu-ray player that was going to give me the PQ I wanted, namely, smooth, film-like reproduction of blu-ray and the OPPO did just that. The Sony was nice but looked sharper in an artificial sort of way, if that makes sense. If I compare the images to 35mm film, the OPPO looked so much like Kodachrome 25 with rich, deep colors and the Sony closer to a 400 or 800 ASA film with colors though nice, lacked that depth. For me that was the big buying point for the OPPO. I'm still using the sony but with my 32" Dynex in the bedroom and you won't hear me complaining.

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Denon. I haven't tweaked it just yet... but I can already see a pq difference ... the real difference though is the sound!!! Man the Denon analog blows away the Sony I had!!

You folks talking about the Audio being not as good on the Oppo, this is only through Analog ports? Is this a non issue going HDMI? Or does the Denon perform better there too on audio?

HDMI will be equal for audio. I wouldn't underestimate analog on the BDP-83, though. I found it to be on par with the analog section of my Onkyo 885. I haven't tried the Denon to know how they compare, but the BDP-83 is certainly more robust than I have previously found in any players in its price range.
