Default HELP: Does Blu-ray look good on 720p?

Hey guys, i'm new to blu. I love this site, it's so helpful. I recently purchased an LG 42'' Plasma with 720p. I am dying, so dying to get a blu ray player. Prefereably LG BD370 as it's quite affordable.

BUT...i'm so concerned that the picture quality of bluray will look awful on my 720p TV. I've heard people saying that blu on 720p is the same as upscaled dvds. Is this true? If so, then i guess i have to wait a few year till i can afford 1080p TV.

Please help, thanks so much!

Hi ronisandy, and welcome to Blu-ray.com!

Whoever said this or told you this has obviously never seen a Blu-ray movie before. Or saw a Blu-ray movie that had such poor quality it didn`t even deserve a release on this format (yes, there have been a few titles).

I have owned a Panasonic 720p Plasma for several years now, and I can tell you for fact that Blu-ray is far superior to DVD on 720p. 1080p is becoming the standard, but there is no need to hold back if you want a 720p set. It will display Blu-ray movies just fine and you`ll be very happy with it.

Cool!! Now, i can start watching blurays.... I am so psyched and can't wait. this is quite pathetic but i even already have a few BDs even though i don't even own a player hehe... I have Casino Royale, 3:10 to Yuma and Batman Begins gift set. I bought them all on sale, couldn't resist. After reading the great reviews on all three films, i'm really excited!

Thanks so much John, and it's so awesome to be a part of Blu-ray.com. Love it...

Hi Sandy!

Those are some nice flicks to watch on Blu-ray! You're gonna love them! If you click COLLECTION underneath my name, you'll see the 99 movies I have so far.

Some of my personal faves are:

Baraka
Planet Earth
Kingdon of Heaven
Band of Brothers
The Dark Knight

I love Concert BD's and have almost 30 of those. If they interest you, I can recommend:

Chris Botti
Stevie Wonder
Dave Matthews
Legends of Jazz

Be sure to check out the stickies on the various forums and sub-forums, as we have many topics and I'm sure you''l gravitate to those of interest. The members here are really cool and respectful. You'll be welcomed with open arms and we'll offer you all the advice you want/need.

I have two 720p Panasonic plasmas and Blu-Ray looks magnificant on both. Whether it's 720 or 1080, it's all HD.

I agree with John. I have a 32" LG 720p and blu rays look fantastic.
I would definatly say that you buy The Dark Knight to complete the batman collection. If you are considering your purchases on video quality, you can search Blu-Ray.com's movie database. They review basically every Blu-ray that comes out. Congrats and enjoy your blu rays!

at 42" it would be best to get a 1080P. At the 32 or even 37" 720P looks great.

On a 42" TV, at normal viewing distances, the difference b/t 720p and 1080p is negligible. You'll be fine, and your BDs will look awesome!

If you have any interest in any of the performers on this Best of Soundstage I would highly suggest picking it up.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B001P6DPDW?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1251503117&sr=8-5&%74%61%67=%62%6C%75%72%61%79%66%6F%72%75%6D%2D%3 2%30

Can be had brand new for $7 delivered from one of the sellers on Amazon market place. Would love to hear your comments on how it looks on your 720p plasma. I have a Panasonic 42" 720p plasma in my bedroom and it looks pristine!

I just bought a Panasonic 42" Plasma 720p for the bedroom and the picture is amazing. We sit about 8ft away looks good on HD channels and Blu Ray. You won't be disappointed on the picture quality.

hi sandy and welcome to the board. just a piece of advise, all blu rays are not created equal. ALWAYS read reviews before buying any blu ray title. most newer titles look great but some older titles don't or can't get a really good transfer. also, i don't know if you have a ht system, but sound is also very important when selecting a blu ray title.

God who comes up with this crap? I hate when people open thier mouths and give advice on stuff that they have no clue about I swear, 1080p is like the extra upsell, like the undercoat rust proofing carsales people try and push. Might you benefit from it? Maybe... but chances are you wont or you wont notice enough, except in your pocket book.

99% people arent going to notice 720 vs 1080 UNLESS the size is 50' plus and within 5 feet of the display. Youll enjoy your blu rays on a 720p tv, trust us.

Now I know some people are gonna come storming in and say "but i can see a difference!". Thats great; your the one percent. But its such a small difference I really don't believe my cash is worth it.

Well those people who say things like that basically think that upscaling a dvd gives it better quality but and then think well then there is no point in getting a Blu-ray movie in 720P since it will look pretty much the same thing. But what those people are forgetting is dvds are still 480i quality. Sure upscaling a dvd makes it look better on a HDTV over a regular tv but it's not Blu-ray quality which is 1080P, and even downscaling a Blu-ray to 720P is still 20 times better then a dvd upscaled to 720P. I wish more people would understand that if they are trying to give advice to people.

Good morning Sandy, although I suppose it's evening for you!

Indonesia, eh? I should let you know that one of my favourite dishes is Bahmi Goring and I use Sambal Oelek to spice things up on a lot more than Indonesian dishes. Just love that stuff!
