Default Is 720p HDTV good enough for playing Blu-ray?

Hey everyone. I'm sorry if this has been posted before but I really need to know. I have a 720p HDTV and i was wondering if Blu-ray will still look good on it. Sony keeps saying full 1080p HD on their movies so I want to know before I invest in Blu-ray. Thanks.

ABSOLUTELY! Yes Blu looks awesome in 720p. You have to understand that Bluray is capable of displaying 1080p. You are not losing any picture quality.

Its worse to have to upconvert. DVD to 720 or 1080.

Thanks. I always thought you must have 1080p TV or the picture quality won't be good. Good to know I don't need to buy an new TV capable of 1080p if 720p or 1080i is perfectly fine.

Unless your TV is 40 inches or larger you likely won't notice a difference between 720p and 1080p anyway. And even if it is bigger than 40 inches you still likely won't notice much.

I have a Sim 300e 720 DLP front projector paired with a 100" 16x9 Stewart Firehawk screen and the Samsung BDP 1200. At a seating distance of 13' feet the picture is phenomenal. Especially a film like Apocalypto which fills the whole screen.

I also have a 65' mits 1080p DLP. I switch between the two. Honestly there is some difference as the Mits provides more pop and detail is much better but I still prefer the "big screen" experience. Bottom line is prices on 1080P products (rptv's, lcd's fp's) are really coming down. If you can afford one go for it. If you already have a 720P device than you're not missing that much.

I had a Toshiba 720p DLP TV for about two years, and Blurays looked absolutely amazing on it...

The 1080p projector i just got though really displays the difference between the two. 1080p is pretty awesome...

It still looks awesome on 720p, but...
if you want to enjoy all of Blu-ray, go with 1080p....

its like, you wouldnt buy a Sidekick 3 for only using text messages. right...

1080p is the ultimate, however for all the reasons mentioned earlier, if you have a 720p TV or 1080i TV you will get a great picture that you may or may not be able to tell apart from a 1080p depending on screen size.

Don't sweat it and enjoy!

720p is more than fine. That is what I am running now. Not sure if upgrading to 1080p is worth it right now. May wait for the prices to drop to where the 720p TV's are now.

I consider the PS3 to be under the same umbrella as the stand alone players.

720p looks great, if your used to 480 or standard DVD.

However, if you put a 720p and a 1080p TV next to each other, especially a larger screen, and play a blu-ray movie on them, You will see a difference.

Some will notice the sharpness and crisp detail better then others. I would suggest going to your favorite higher end electronics store and doing this compare. If you can't tell the diff, then go with the 720p.

But, if you have a sharp eye, and many do, you will want to spend the extra few hundered on the 1080p. It truly is the best possible picture. And, imho, if your spending the bucks on blu-ray discs, you might as well get everything out of it that you can.

Unless you're viewing a very large screen it's tough to tell. However, it's also based on who is watching it. Some may notice more of a difference than others.

I subscribe to Home Theater Magazine and they say to have a noticable difference between 720p/1080i and 1080p you need at least a 50 inch screen. To notice a lot of difference you need a front projecter where an image can get up to 100 inches or bigger.
