That was fast. But not really a surpise. Gonna be painful if it comes the same time as Toy Story 1 & 2.

Sadly enough its been a bomb at the BO. It doesn't seem to be gaining back its total production budget of 105 million. A bunch of people said it was going to be a successful hit, they failed.

P.S Not even The Lion King which was 100x better had that crazy production budget cost.

I have a feeling it will be the same day as Toy Story 1 & 2.
Woah, that's a lot of money spent on that day, because I will without a doubt buy this as a blind-buy, and same with Toy Story 1 & 2.

It has hardly been a bomb... It has made $64,000,000 in the US alone and is just coming up on it's 3rd week in wide release. It still hasn't even opened in several huge foreign markets, where it stands to make a ton of money, plus merchandise has been selling like crazy. They may not be happy with how the numbers look right now, but it's way too early to say it has bombed. The Emperor's New Groove didn't perform that well in theatres, but sold really well on DVD, there is no question that they will easily make their money back on this film. Hopefully they will learn their lesson and work out their release dates a little better next time around. They had to know Avatar and the chipmunk movie were going to take a lot of business.

105 Million !!! Are you kidding me.... that's more than Aladdin too, but it felt like the animation was really bad compared to the last movies, it looked almost like a Direct-to-Video kind of Disney movie, which pissed me off.

The theatrical releases matter less and less anymore anyway.

The DVD/BLU releases is where the real money is made. And I'm sure this one will sell crazy.

Not to mention it opening around the time of Avatar was gonna kill the BO anyway.

This movie is in no way a bomb it has pretty much already made back it's budget and will continue to make more money after that and with the DVD/Blu release also.

But so far its been a big disappointment, to not say: bomber. That's one problem, studios not planning precisely their release dates with much bigger film competitions (such as Avatar) being released around the same time. Way too many movies being released on a same day, thats the cause of many getting hurt in their box office sales receipt.

And opened in mid-December, when nobody ever goes to movies unless they have a pretty darn good reason to. (Which accounts for the money it did make.)

Again, there's a difference between a "disappointment" and a "bomb", and the latter is usually manufactured sight-unseen to justify their religious faith in the former:
Disney's "Treasure Planet" was competition-shoved into a tentpole-crowded post-Thanksgiving opening behind Harry Potter, 007, and Disney's own "Santa Clause" (they thought it would be out of theaters by then), and was proclaimed a studio-destroying catastrophe--and was instrumental in the Animation Shutdown of '03--because it had opened in...FOURTH PLACE!!!! Um, just out of curiosity, which one were they expecting it to beat?
To this day, people are still convinced the movie itself must've been a historic turkey of celluloid-melting Gigli proportions because...well, like, it didn't make money! I mean, if it wasn't, that would mean BoxOfficeMojo was wrong! And big Hollywood-grosses people are ALWAYS right!

...It's called "Context", people. That's why we're not "worshipping" the Avatar grosses, either.

Not even close to a bomb. The Disney films are made to sell Merchandise, in addition to Box office. Plus Disney films typically rake in more money overseas then they do in the US due to the fact that animated films are more easily dubbed for foreign countries with less/no lip sync issues. The $100 budget also includes marketing costs, not just the film's production. Also remember that some of the money was used to reopen an animation studio...so the cost of this film will be more expensive then the next one to make. I will say the timing of the release was terrible though. They should have released this film during Thanksgiving. A mid-December release was a terrible idea. They had to know that Avatar and Sherlock Holmes were coming, and that the Chipmunks would outperform it financially if released at the same time. That is the key mistake in the movie's release...it's timing. I'm a die-hard Disney fan, and I haven't even found the time to see it yet.

The film has not been announced yet. Ultimate Disney just posted it under their rumored/expected page. It will be announced at CES, or if they don't finalize the plans, they will announce it after that. A May/June release date is more reasonable, but I could see it as early as April.

Hopefully we get it soon then with the coupon and a rental to see if I even like the movie.

Reportedly, it was designed for Christmas Day:
Then, pushed back to a "prestige" exclusive NY/LA opening in Thanksgiving, with a wide release two week later. (Remember, they were still unsure about coming back, and wanted to strategically make audiences' mouths water a bit, just in case.)

The reason given was "too much competition for a heavy weekend"--
But Sherlock hadn't announced their Christmas release yet, so Disney's last minute game-of-chicken blink made fans jawdrop, "You have got to be kidding us...You were scared of freakin' ALVIN?????????? "
(What was worse is, every other all-big movies-are-the-same columnists were predicting dire doom and gloom of "Can Disney beat Alvin?" for Dec. 25th...And when Disney believed it too, we animation fans felt like we were ten miles down the rabbit hole, and Rod Serling was looking over our shoulder. )

Ah no? Then what does this tell you, if it doesn't say "announced"?

I think it will gain back its budget from the US market. I hear it's really good. I haven't had the chance to see it yet, but I really want to.
