Default What's your favorite action movie and why?

There is a GI Joe thread that got me to realize that different people really like different movies. I was interested to see what action movies people hold in high regard. What is your favorite action flick?

Die Hard
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Taken

Die Hard and Raiders are examples of what I call template films: Films that have become a template for other films in the genre.

Taken is a perfect example of doing (A LOT) more with less. I was amazed at the amount of action and tension in the film without using over-the-top gimmicks or special effects.

T2 - this isn't a favorite genre of mine, but this is a sentimental favorite. saw it in the theaters when it came out at age 14. just the mall chase scene with the truck and the harley jump alone qualify it. unprecedented action for its time.

If we are talking strictly action movies and not including war movies, then for me it's....

Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harrison sure can take a punch.

Strictly action would be Heat for me.... have always loved that movie and the bank heist/street battle is my most favorite scene from an action movie ever. Then top it off with the pairing of Deniro and Pacino. Will be picking it up on blu this week and I cant wait to see and hear it again is glorious HD.

I see a couple people have said Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is one of my favorites as well but I put those films in the action/adventure category.

I was thinking about that too but realized that there really is no "pure" action film. It has to be anchored by something. In the case of Heat, it is a cop film just like Raiders is an adventure film so I think it definately qualifies.

Raiders of the Lost Ark and Predator.

Because they're both perfect.

Die Hard is my favorite pure action flick. I think Taken was one of the better action flicks I'd seen a while. Didn't go crazy with the special effects it was simple story with a guy kicking a$$.

Mel Gibson has also had a pretty good career with some good action flicks. I think Christian Bale can be the next huge action star. If he's not already.

yeah, batman has given him a bolt, i haven't seen terminator salvation so cant comment on that, but whoever it is will need to have success across a range of action roles as arnold did...a tall order...

unlike arnold, bale is great in drama/thrillers (machinist, prestige) and action, so i'm guessing his time will be split

He's been a few pretty good action flicks. Reign on Fire and Equilibrium I thought they were decent action movies. He's got more range than Arnold for sure.
Also Will Smith is a individual that might be biggest action star since Arnold.
