Default New Pannny V10 50: possible problems

I recently bought a Panny V10 50 inch and I'm noticing some issues that I'd like to throw out there. I'm seeing image retention in the following ways:

1. When the disc loading or HDMI input screen comes up for no more than 30 seconds then dissapears, you can still see the image in the black during the break until the disc actually loads and starts playing. At that point it's gone. Even the message that states "depending on your Blu-ray player, it may take such and such amount of time to load", gets "burned in" during the next area of black before going to either the disc menu or playing prevues.

2. Same thing happens when you are in an actual Blu-ray menu. For example, the Ratatouille menu........you can be in it for as little as 10 seconds, setting the audio options, then hitting play. It goes to black for a moment while it loads and you can see the fancy white writing from the setup menu burned in the black. Then the movie plays and it appears to be gone.

3. When those green prevue screens come up for upcoming stuff, like the ones you see showing the movie rating, every line of text has ghost bar that is the same width as the text running across the enitre screen. Even the width of the boxy movie rating graphic is also showing this issue. Again, once I get into the movie, the issue seems to be gone.

Is anybody else seeing this or has seen this? I had the orbiter set to auto at first, now I have it set to periodic 1 minute. I don't see anything different. I've tried those scrolling bars in between movies, but no matter what the same thing happens as mentioned above.

Do I have a bad screen? Again, once in a movie the image seems fine, although I haven't come across a movie yet that has one scene with graphics, then a dark image the next. I'm going to have to get a "dark" movie like The Dark Knight or something and see if bright images from a previous film sequence show up in a dark scene. I had read so much about burn in not being an issue anymore with plasma and now I'm starting to wonder. What I'm experiencing doesn't look to be perminent burn in, but if the screen can't keep up and clear out something bright from a previous frame in a movie when it then goes to a dark section......something's wrong there.

That is a common problem with new plasmas. That is why break in is important. Reduce the brightness and contrast of your TV and it should be less noticeable, but the older the TV gets, the less retention it has also.

I had it on different settings from STANDARD to THX to CUSTOM(which I created something in between STANDARD and THX modes in regards to brightness, contrast and color). I never use VIVID as that's just too crazy or GAME. I'll try to get some pictures to show what I'm seeing.

Spears & Munsil High-Definition Benchmark Blu-ray Disc Edition

...bring your settings down to an acceptable level, and just allow some time for your phosphors to wear in.

Here's a shot, forgive the alignment and moire, of the "text" issue. This happens especially in these types of screens, but can also be seen to a lesser extent in the main menu of Blu-ray discs that show text for "play movie", "setup", etc. It's a little bit more obvious in person than the photo here, but you get the idea. Also, this shot was taken with the screen set to standard and only black levels set to dark instead of lite.

Did you break in your plasma ? I noticed that several people advised you to do so. It takes at least 100 hours of break in before you start messing around with the settings and displaying static images. Otherwise, you'll be getting exactly what you are describing. If you did not follow proper break in procedures, you may well be plagued with screen problems including various forms of image retention. If you DID break it in properly, have you calibrated it yet ? You won't get a proper picture until you do.

Both my 4 year old 50" Dell 720p screen as well as my few month old 50" G10 do this, I believe this is just the nature of the beast.

As far as retention goes, I get none of that...I did run the break in disc for about 50 hours though then mixed up my TV watching between everyday viewing and movies.

I have not displayed static images and neither the salesman nor the installer mentioned anything about a break in period. In fact, as I look through the Panasonic manual, I don't see anything stating a break in period either? It has done this from day one.

People always jump to break-in whenever any kind of combination of "plasma" and "problems" is put together. You're going to get image retention on pure black screens like that, as the phosphors are still a bit "hot". This may or may not go away as the set is used, but it's pretty normal. How many movies are you watching with an all-black static screen?

The other issue- well, I have noted it as well. I ONLY see it on the preview screens. No commercials or anything with other colors I've used have ever shown this. I've calibrated my set with Spears & Munsil.

Just for point of reference here are my settings. They are very close visually to THX:

Picture Mode: Standard (Read it had a higher luminosity than Custom)
Contrast: 40
Brightness: 65
Color: 44
Tint: -1
Sharpness:50 (doesn't matter where I set it I can't see a difference on an HD pattern)
Color Temp: Warm2
Color mgmt: Off
XV color: Off
CATS: Off
Video NR: Off
Block NR: Off
Mosquito NR: Off
Black Level: Light
HD Size: Size 2

Are you describing the outline of three vertical bars on the left and right of the first three lines of text...because that looks source related to me.

It isnt a source problem doby... I had the same issue on several new Pannys at work (and my G10 at home) when they were relatively new on several sources... but good news to the OP... it went away... my TV i ran a break-in for about 100 hours and then probably another 100 or so of regular use and the problem is gone... and the ones at work it was gone in about a month (unfortunately my boss makes us run the TVs all on vivid so it took a while to get rid of this problem and IR problems)

Hrm- I'm not quite to 100 hours of normal usage yet, so I'm open to the theory.

Yeah I remembered the first week I used my Hitachi 50' Plasma. There was one instance where I brought up the TV's setup menu for like 30 seconds, and the setup menu image was still showing for like a minute, even after shutting off the menu. But it has never done it since. In fact I could leave the Food Network on for like an hour and still not see any image retention from their logo.

I really don't buy into all this break in period talk. I have never done any sort of break in period on my plasma, and I have owned it for almost a year now without any IR issues that whole time, except for that once instance in the beginning. My picture still looks as good as day one. To the OP... Just give it time as your TV is still brand new. It will go away.
