Default What's wrong with Ong Bak 2 picture quality?

There is something seriously wrong in the flashback scene in Ong Bak 2. It's not mentioned in the Blu-ray.com review but accurately stated in HomeTheaterForum review.

Quote:
The film is accurately framed at 2.35:1 and presented in 1080p with the VC-1 codec. The film gets off to a rocky start with some pretty horrendous image manipulation, giving the scenes an over-blue cast, flattened contrast, grayed-out blacks, and odd horizontal banding in its fade-to-black transitions.

Anyone know what's going on?

So it's just during the flashback scene? I watched it Friday night and really did not notice the issue, but that's probably just me being non-observant. I thought the PQ was pretty darn good, and way better than Ong Bak (one).

In short, how Tony Jaa and Panna Rittikrai envisioned their film.

The flashback as in the opening scene? It's like that on the Thai DVD too. It's just the way they did it. My guessing it's to give it like a trance. Also the scenes where
[Show spoiler]Tien's family getting killed
is like that. Also, the scene where the king
[Show spoiler]comes to the village after Tien thought he killed him has a really soft image on the reveal. As if it is to make the viewer go, "Didn't he just die?" And then we cut back to focus with the next shot as we see him opening his vest and he's got armor
. Hope that helps.

I can understand the soft focus and poor resolution as part of director's vision. However, what's with way off black level in fade to black all about? That has to be a technical mistake.

Not in this case. It is how the scene was filmed and I just checked the Thai DVD: the same "issue" occurs.

Sometimes artistic choices are made in cinematography and photography which some people dismiss as errors, flaws, or mistakes.

This is why Warner put a disclaimer before the start of Three Kings informing viewers that some scenes were shot artistically and that there is nothing wrong with the disc. The same thing occurred with Saving Private Ryan.
