Default If You Don't Like ___ , You Don't Like film Filmmaking

Is there a movie(s) that you think separates cinephiles from average movie goers? I know that film is subjective and everyone has the right to their own opinion, blah blah blah. But in YOUR opinion, if someone doesn't like a particular film, are you convinced that he/she simply doesn't appreciate the art of filmmaking?

For me, it's There Will Be Blood. If you hated TWBB, you were most likely expecting to see explosions, boobies, and fast cars... not that there's necessarily anything wrong with those

Bit extreme to make that kind of claim but I have to go with...A New Hope.

"2001." It tells its story through images rather than some narrator describing on-screen events, and asks you to fill in some blanks rather than spelling it out for you. It's more art than product, more having you make your own conclusion rather than spoon-feeding you a message. That was, for me personally, the first movie that really distinguished the craft of moviemaking from something like "Independence Day".

Totally agree, I think TWBB was probably the best acting performance since Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs...And the movie was by far the best
that came out that year...Shame it didn't win best picture....

All right guys off to Panda to get some lunch

I disagree with the whole topic, and 2001 is a good example why.

I have a lot of respect for Kubrik, and love the concept of what he tried for in 2001.

I still don't like the movie.

Liking something, and understanding/respecting something, are not the same thing.

On the inverse side, I kinda like Bad Boys, but don't respect it at all from a film-making standpoint, so it does work both ways.

I'm not the type who says, "If you don't like ______ you suck." I'm the type who says, "If you like ______ you suck." To steal an Ebert quote from one of the members of this site, "Those who think Transformers [II] is a great or even a good film are, may I tactfully suggest, not sufficiently evolved. Film by film, I hope they climb a personal ladder into the realm of better films, until their standards improve." In this instance Transformers II is named, but any number of other movies would substitute.

I liked There Will Be Blood, despite of rather than because of PTA, who in my opinion is an overrated (there I said it) director. It was a good story, it looked fantastic and DDL is among the best, but PTA confuses audience torture gimmicks with dramatic conflict a little too often to be what I would call a Great Director.

+1 with your approach!

Also, very interesting opinion on PTA. He's one of my favorites and I've never thought he used gimmicks in lieu of dramatic conflict. When I revisit his films when they're released on Blu, I'll keep that observation in the back of my mind. Could you please give some examples of why you believe he does this?

it depends: you can understand a film and not like it. however the negative is not true: you can't not understand a film and not like it. if i watch a film in japanese audio (that i dont understand) instead of english, can i legitimately say it sucks? based on what? what sucks? in that case, what sucks is my misunderstanding, not the film.

2001 isn't meant to be understood, yet many make the mistake that it must be or that there is some character-driven plot that isnt there, hence create needless frustration.
