Default If You Don't Like ___ , You Don't Like film Filmmaking

Is there a movie(s) that you think separates cinephiles from average movie goers? I know that film is subjective and everyone has the right to their own opinion, blah blah blah. But in YOUR opinion, if someone doesn't like a particular film, are you convinced that he/she simply doesn't appreciate the art of filmmaking?

For me, it's There Will Be Blood. If you hated TWBB, you were most likely expecting to see explosions, boobies, and fast cars... not that there's necessarily anything wrong with those

"2001." It tells its story through images rather than some narrator describing on-screen events, and asks you to fill in some blanks rather than spelling it out for you. It's more art than product, more having you make your own conclusion rather than spoon-feeding you a message. That was, for me personally, the first movie that really distinguished the craft of moviemaking from something like "Independence Day".

I disagree with the whole topic, and 2001 is a good example why.

I have a lot of respect for Kubrik, and love the concept of what he tried for in 2001.

I still don't like the movie.

Liking something, and understanding/respecting something, are not the same thing.

On the inverse side, I kinda like Bad Boys, but don't respect it at all from a film-making standpoint, so it does work both ways.

it depends: you can understand a film and not like it. however the negative is not true: you can't not understand a film and not like it. if i watch a film in japanese audio (that i dont understand) instead of english, can i legitimately say it sucks? based on what? what sucks? in that case, what sucks is my misunderstanding, not the film.

2001 isn't meant to be understood, yet many make the mistake that it must be or that there is some character-driven plot that isnt there, hence create needless frustration.

I say, you can't make everyone like a good movie. But, your a true movie buff when you can watch a movie you don't like and appreciate it anyway. Whether it be acting, story development, cinematography, score, etc.
