Default need a recommendation

My parents are looking to get an LCD so I need a recommendation. Needs to be between 50 and 55'' and less than $1500. I've been looking at the Toshiba Regza and Sammy LN52B630. Are those good sets? Is there anything else I should look at? thanks

In my opinion, and having seen them with my own eyes, the best LCDs on the market right now are the Samsung LED LCD TVs. Look for their product numbers, SKUs, whatever to start with UN. The UN denotes the LED lines of TVs. For example, the top of the line is a UN55B8500. The 55 is the screen size. 8500 is the series number. 8500 is the top, 8000 is next, 7000, 6000, and so on. The higher the series, the more features and better the TV, but of course, the higher the price.

The 55" 8500, if you can find one, is probably around $3,500 because it is the only set with local dimming or LEDs behind the screen. The 55" 8000 (UN55B8000) and other series TVs are cheaper because they are edge lit or the LEDs are along the edge of the screen. The 8000 can be had for around $2,300 from Abt. To get the set into your price range, look at either smaller screens or a lower series, depending on what you want more, bigger screen or more features. For example, the 55" 6000 series of LED TVs will be less than the 55" 8000 series.

CES just ended in Las Vegas, so this year's new TVs will probably start hitting the market April'ish, with another batch around Sept'ish. Not really worth the wait on the new Samsungs unless you like brushed metal instead of black frames on your TV, and even then, they might be more expensive than your price range. But the release of new models drives down the value of the old models. So keep an eye on those prices.

Good TV deals are posted here every afternoon around 1500.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

Are they set on an LCD? I would recommend a nice Panasonic Plasma if possible. If it must be an LCD than Sony and Samsung are the best in that dept. I do not know much about the Toshiba line.
