hello all! i am a fan of all movies, i have no particular genre i must buy. all my purchases are blind buys or what is highly recommened by all of you...recently i went on an uncontrolable bluray buying spree, and now i have all these titles i have never seen before!i select which movie i am going to watch by closing my hands and whatever movie i grab is the movie i watch! anyway. yesterday i picked my movie and it happen to be "North By Northwest" by alfred hitchcock. i was a little hesitant about watching this movie at that time cause i kind of wanted a good action movie. Well, l have to say, i absolutely loved it!! im not talking about just the movie it self either. For a 50 year old movie, it looked and sounded amazing! and of course the movie itself was very, very good...
i have always loved old movies for some reason, i think cause of my dad. There is just a whole different feeling i get when watching an old movie that i dont get with movies made today. Yes obviously i love new movies with the flawless sound, picture, special effects, explosions...but there is just something about classics, i dont know. i couldnt even name one tv show that has come out in the past 8 years, cause if its not tv land, amc or the new, i dont watch it! my question is, does anybody know of any classics such as this one that were transffered to bluray, and that have beautiful sound and picture quality? i dont ever hear of anybody talking about these types of movies, and would like to get a couple more to throw into the mix... any suggestions will be greatly apprecitated, thanks! |

no, not at all-- it came out in the late 60's and has Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway in it as bank robbers in the depression era. Considered extremely violent for it's day (the ending in particular), it's well worth seeing.
Also has a young Gene Hackman and Gene Wilder in it.. |

As far as other classics go, I don't think you can go wrong with Casablanca. It's a good introduction to one of the great screen icons--Humphrey Bogart. Also, Dr. Strangelove is a solid Classic on Blu-ray. |

You also can't go wrong with any of the Disney classics. Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and Pinocchio look amazing. Even if your not a fan, you'll be able to appreciate there beauty.

I myself am a huge fan of James Cagney and Steve McQueen and love all their films, but if I had to choose just a few titles from each to recommend to a beginner, they would be:
James Cagney: White Heat City for Conquest Each Dawn I Die Steve McQueen: The Sand Pebbles Papillon The Great Escape |

As an example, there's the classic scene of him sitting on the coupling rod, and going up and down. The average person might see that and go "oh, whatever, he's sitting on the wheel, going up and down", but they don't realize how dangerous doing that really was. |

Besides Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, Gone With The Wind and Bonnie and Clyde...
The Searchers is a fantastic movie that has really influenced many movies after it and features John Wayne in arguably his best role. Also, the quality of the BD is really excellent. Also, many of the Criterion films to this point are classics and being Criterion, noted for the excellence of their transfer. Examples are The Third Man, Repulsion and The Seventh Seal among others. |
