PS3.

...not trying to get into the pissing contest about it, but as an all around player its one of the best.

Media streaming from the PC is huge in my opinion.

Very interesting. I don't think I would of even thought of that. Taking that into consideration, what other players would you suggest. PS3 though, great idea!

Go with the PS3. Top of the line visuals and you can upgrade software (if need be) and enjoy BD Live - if he would want to. And if the occassional game comes out he wants, he could enjoy that too. Even simple games from PSN get the most "casual" gamer interested. Something to think about...

Ive also got a Sony BDP-S350 player, and its very solid. I would recommend any Sony player, Pioneer, Oppo, Panasonic....Samsung and LG i'm a bit leary, I read more horror stories about them.

But when it comes down to it for me, the wi-fi media streaming just cannot be replaced. For the price, the PS3 just does so much more.

edit: my opinion is from a movie watchers point of view. I rarely play games on my PS3.

Somewhere on cnet I heard that using the ps3 as a bd player will shorten the lifespan? truth or myth? In my bedroom I am using a Slim Ps3 as a bd play and some gaming.

I would personally suggest a panasonic in that price range, I really liked mine, load times not horrible (not nearly as quick as the ps3, or the OPPO, but the OPPO is well above that price range), updating firmware is simple with internet connection, and overall the panasonics are solid players. The bd60 is listed on amazon for $130, the bd80 is a little over $300, either would be good. I personally did not like the sony player I had so I cant recommend those.

It is made to play BD's, so why would it shorten the lifespan?

PS3 and the Blu-ray remote. Can't go wrong with that.

I just bought a Sony BDP-N460 and am not at all happy with the sound levels of the player. The voices are WAY too soft, and the sound effects are WAY too loud. I spent the whole time turning the volume up and down, depending on what was happening in the movie. I haven't found anywhere in the setup menu of my TV (Pioneer SD-533HD5) or the player to do anything about this.

Default Sony BDP-S360

I love my Sony BDP-S360. You should be able to get it for less than $200 and it is extremely reliable. The picture and audio are great and it is pretty quiet while playing.

This has nothing to do with the player. What kind of sound system are you using?

As for player recommendations I have a Sony and it works great. As for the PS3 it isn't worth it if you are not interested in using it for things other the playing movies. It has a far greater power consumption than a standard blu-ray player so using it just for movies will cost you more in the long run on your power bill.

If your friend can wait they might want to see what prices the newly announced players will cost before making a purchase. The newer players should be faster and with more features than previous models.

My sony 360 was an open box at BB. Works great. I was in BB yesterday and they had an open box Sony 560 for $229. Asked if they would take less and they would. Wanted me to give a price. Told him I'll be back today and will probably say $200 or less. No problems with open boxes.

I am playing the sound through my TV speakers. It is a Pioneer SD-533HD5 rear projection. The sound with my DVD player is fine...the only thing I changed was the Blu-Ray player and it is unacceptably loud with sound effects...and way too low with voices.

Its a no brainer .. Playstation 3 ! And may I add that apart from being a spectacular Bluray player and an incredible video game console, it also happens to be the only Bluray player on the market so far that will be upgradible to 3D complience should you decide to go full 3D in the future.

Seriously in that price range there should only be once choice on you're mind. The only other scenerio would be a Pioneer Elite, Denon, Oppo etc and that is well above you're budget.

Ok try to search for dialog enhancer in your player settings and everything will work correctly.

Thanks for the help! I tried looking but couldn't find anything in the audio setup menu. It had options for Audio DRC which it stated "Selects the dynamin range setting when playing a BD. TV mode - Sounds are compressed heavily. Low sounds are easier to hear."

That was the only thing I could find that was semi-related. I really appreciate this help guys!

That's easy - but not so easy
Step 1. Qualify your friend - find your friend's needs. Gaming? No other choice but the PS3. Just movies - you have many choices.

Step 2. After qualifying - start pricing - there are a lot of good deals out there under $200.00.

Step 3. Buy the thing already !!!!!

Recommendations: PS3 (if gaming is a must), Sony N460, LG370,Panasonic BMP-60.

Place to look for good deals - http://www.newegg.com

Happy hunting!

I've had a PS3 60Gb since they premiered, I use it for Blu-rays... heavily and daily. Still works as good as the day I opened it.

One that note, here's what I've learned. (In reference to the OP). The PS3 seems less to me like a game system with BD support, Sony really went the route of a home entertainment catch-all. I'll elaborate slightly

The LG player is great. No doubt. When you take out a Blu-ray it sends an LG picture to the screen until another Blu-ray is put in. The PS3 has an elegant menu, waiting to do something. Blu-ray is one of the many things you can choose to do. But you can also watch Netflix, or download video on demand or play games, or surf the web, or stream your music library or watch your home videos (streaming or off the card) etc. Yes, many of these options are more cute than useful, but many are useful.

As an example. I run a theatre and we tape shows (less for entertainment than for analysis). I capture them into the archives on our computer and whenever someone wants to watch a show on the HD, they turn on the PS3 and have access to our entire library.
