This has nothing to do with the player. What kind of sound system are you using?

As for player recommendations I have a Sony and it works great. As for the PS3 it isn't worth it if you are not interested in using it for things other the playing movies. It has a far greater power consumption than a standard blu-ray player so using it just for movies will cost you more in the long run on your power bill.

If your friend can wait they might want to see what prices the newly announced players will cost before making a purchase. The newer players should be faster and with more features than previous models.
