Default Did Something Stupid - Need Opinions

Ok, I was clearing some snow and decided to use the snow shovel to remove the top 10 inches off my car. You can see where this is going. Suffice to say, I nicked the car. I misjudged where the hood started and scratched it. So the question is, any good ways to get rid of it? It's not a gouge or deep. Probably like a human hair deep maybe?

Am I looking to get a pro to repaint it or is this something that I can fix on my own? Thanks for any input.

Some good detailers can buff out pretty nasty scratches. In spring time, swing by a reputable detailer and check it out.

when you run your fingernail over it does it catch? if so its down into the paint and your are screwed. have to repaint that hood. if its not too bad you might can buff it out.

If you can feel it with your fingernail.. it might be a little too deep to get it off yourself. If you say it's a hair-line scratch.. Try a light polish. Stuff you buy off the counter has fillers in their chemicals, and will only hide the scratch. After you wash your car the scratch will only show again.

Wetsand, and a Rotary Buffer will get rid of that scratch. Get a professional detailer. And a job for that is like a tip.. NOT $100!

Wetsanding and buffing it out with a rotary can remove it 100% Those pics provided can be removed by a good detailer.

Buy a light polish, or compound and do it by hand. Try a 3M product, but I'm afraid they contain fillers.

I personally would go with menzerna products and work my way into the finer polish... Menzerna worked out some SERIOUS scratches off my sister's car.

3m is nice but like Menzerna, you will need to work it down.

Vicon,

I forgot to mention. Those pics, and what you indicated seems like you only scratched the Clear Coat of the paint. You should be good trying to minimize the scratch, but if it still there you might want to find a mobile detailer that can get it out. Sometimes they won't have to wetsand it, but just buff it with a rotary first.

Thanks for the info. My car is going in to the dealer to get fixed for another issue and I will get them to take a look at it and give me an idea.

My poor car has had bad luck. There was a huge piece of lumber in the road and I was running over it before I could do anything to avoid it (too much traffic) and it banged under the car. I got out after getting to my destination 15 minutes later and I then realized the scope of the damage. It tore off my rocker panel of my car. From the front wheel well to the rear. A 5 foot long plastic piece and all the trimmings, ripped off. I was pissed. The same piece of lumber managed to splinter after a huge truck ran over it in front of me (why I did not see it in time) and all that flew up and hit the windshield. Cracked it.

Terrible. So I am getting all that fixed this week.

If I lived in an area with snow I would never think once of putting a shovel near my car. That's just me

But again, some things you can't control like lumber on the road or even salt killing the paint on hood and bumpers!

I normally wouldn't either. However for some reason, I got the bright idea to do so. Lol. When I had another car, we got a ton of ice. I did not have an ice scraper so I used my soda can on the windshield. Lol, bad idea. It left "metallic" marks all over the thing. Terrible idea. Oddly enough though, they went away after a week.

I now have a REAL ice scraper.

Ice Scraper is a NO NO for me as well. When we were in the 20's for like 2 straight weeks in Florida I used warm water to get rid of the ice. I have an ice scraper, but I'm sure it will leave tiny marks on the window. I know that's not a good idea since it can crack or make the ice thicker, but I never had problems.

BTW, dried soda can etch your paint when it drives off.

Ugh.

I heard warm water is a no no. Cracks glass.

I hate when my car is dirty. Your taking to someone that gets his engine cleaned at least twice a year. Nice and CLEAN. Looks new.
