Default Onkyo 605 best way to set the audio 300

Ok just got the onkyo 605 and 7.1 surround speakers, and I have the sony bdp-s300. What is the best settings to set to get the optimal sound. Should I put the player on auto or convert everything to pcm for the audio? Anyone else have these two components? I am new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

I know that there is no blu ray player yet that send true hd signals to a reciever, right that it all gets converted to pcm.

Is that right?

well, it gets converted to PCM...but PCM is not a bitstream signal, its a Linear PCM signal....but its still Dolby TrueHD nonetheless, its just been decoded in the player first.

...but I dont think the BD-S300 has ability to decode Dolby TrueHD yet? ...just checked the firmware update site, nothing listed...

....so you will want to listen to the Uncompressed PCM track instead...which to me, sounds richer...although the difference is hard to make out, they both sound excellent.

Yeah no update yet...

Ok my options are switching to auto and that outputs signals according to the status of the connected hdmi device.

Or pcm, which converts all audio signals to linear pcm.

well....at this point, with your player it doesnt matter which...

because the Uncompressed PCM track should automatically be sent as Linear PCM...

...so I guess it couldnt hurt to leave as bitstream, that way when playing a normal dolby digital track, your Onkyo will display "Dolby Digital"...

....so for the time being, you can have it set to either...bitstream may be better for you just so you can let your new reciever do the work, but when you watch blurays, use the Uncompressed PCM track...your Onkyo will display it as "Multichannel"

....get ready for an awesome movie with killer sound!

...well, bitstream and linear pcm are the main terminology.

I guess "auto" means the same as bitstream? if the other is PCM, then im sure it means that.

Also just realizing myself...

you should set to auto (bitstream), because that way when you watch a standard dvd with normal dolby digital or DTS 5.1, your onkyo will use prologicII and make it 7.1.

if set to PCM the onkyo605 is unable to apply this process...

so stick with auto.

Selecting the Uncompressed PCM track will automatically be PCM. Even though it wont be able to turn 5.1 into 7.1, the high definition audio by itself is kick ass.
