Default Could 1080i or 720P player be made at a lower cost?

After reading another thread where someone pointed out that the cheaper HD DVD player doesn't support 1080P, I was thinking..

Could a 720P or 1080i player be made at a cheaper cost than a 1080P player?

Many homes can only support 720P and other's only 1080i. If this could be a significant savings, it seems making a player to support these homes wouldn't be a bad idea. Most people keep TV's for a LONG time. My parents tend to buy the best at the time and keep it forever! For these people, having a player that matches their resolution for a lower price would be a pretty good thing, wouldn't it?

By the time they need a new TV, buying a new player would not be a big deal.

So the big question is would it allow for a lower cost player?
