United Kingdom Why window-box opening titles?
Sorry if this has been posted before...somewhere!

Something I'm sure many of you notice and know the explanation for...

Can anyone explain why older films often have window-boxed opening titles? I've noticed it on Wizard of Oz, GWtW, Robin Hood, Snow White and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Does it happen on all displays? My TV is set up to display all pixels so avoiding over-scan.

It doesn't bother me it's just that I don't understand why these opening titles are like this!?

Any info or links?
