Yamaha RX-V665 Receiver
yamaha_rx_v665-400-400 THREAD.jpg Have read alot but have a simple question to start. Correct me if I am crossways please. A codec is what code the disc was created in? Example: I have a bluray that says DLC surround (codec) and thru research found I should playback in nero 6 on the reciever. (decoder). Thanks, Grant. What is DLC surround? Is that what the back of the blu-ray case says? What blu-ray are you referring to?
When I watch movies on my RX-V765 (pretty much the same as the RX-V665) I usually let the receiver decode whatever is coming in through Straight. Usually it's Dolby, DTS, or PCM. DLC surround doesn't sound familiar at all unless that's something new I never heard about. |

I apoligize as I am a newbie. The Blu Ray disc was Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood. It said on the disc "DTS surround " which from my reading is a 2 channel disc/ codec ? If I set my reciever to Straight I only get 2 channels. ( (BDP set to bitsream audiophile) I read that if I wanted 5.1 surround to set my reciever to NEO 6. Thank You for being patient and answering me. I have read my manual 5 times and read countless posts on the forum trying to both educate myself and not ask dumb questions. Grant.

I have one...well, a generation older...and am very happy with it. My only three negatives are:
- There is talk that the receiver does not handle deep blacks (and maybe other dark colors) very well; but I have not noticed it, probably because I do not have anything else with which to compare. - I still have a minor HDMI handshake issue with the receiver (i think that's the problem) where the sound and/or video cuts out randomly every once in a while but just for a moment of two. I honestly am beginning to think that it is the cheap HDMI cables i bought haha, not saying I am gonna get monster cables ![]() - No way to matrix DTS-Master Audio (lossless codec on some blurays) from 5.1 to 7.1 (to send sound to all my 7 speakers) if the receiver is also doing the decoding. But fortunately my BD player can decode them and then the receiver can matrix up the sound. Other than that I really do love it. Sorry i wrote so much...let us know how it all turns out or any other questions you might have |

Grant, you can use Neo:6 to get a "fake" 5.1 sound out of a two-channel source. It uses algorithms or what not to create a 5.1 experience though I'm pretty sure I'm using all the wrong terms to describe it.
I've used Neo:6 before when I listened to some two channel music and it's pretty okay though I personally always prefer to listen to anything I have on "normal". That is, none of that matrix stuff. Here is the link to Neo:6 straight from the source if you want to check it out: http://www.dts.com/DTS_Audio_Formats...DTS_Neo_6.aspx |

Thank You Beefytwinkie, This helps. Let me ask more. I went to your link and read it.
Basic DTS surround sounds like early DTS in PCM. Is this correct? That is what Eric Clapton/Steve Winwood BD live at madison.... says the audio format is. I have my BDP set at Bitstream (audiophile) output. Is this why my reciever only shows 2 channels unless I use NEO 6? Thank You, Grant. |

Anyway, your player is set to bitstream which is fine. The reason you're getting two-channel audio is because your receiver is processing the audio exactly the way it's being sent from the player to the receiver. You can use Neo:6 to matrix the LPCM stereo track into 5.1 if you really want to. However, on the disc should also be a 5.1 DTS mix. If you choose that, your receiver will play that back as 5.1 without any need for Neo:6's matrixing. Listen to both the LPCM stereo track (with or without Neo:6 is up to you) as well as the DTS track and see which one you like better. I hope this helps. |

Thanks again, On my reciever I do not have 5.1 DTS Mix. My disc says DTS digital. When reading about DTS Digital I beleive they are saying it is an older version of DTS?? Thank You, Grant.

My manual says I have the following Decoders: Pro Logic
PLIIx Movie, PLII Movie, PLIIx Music, PLII Music, PLIIx Game, PLII Game, NEO 6Cin, NEO 6 Music, Neural Surround. High Resolution sources are played back in straight, True HD etc. Thanks, Grant |

Your receiver should say DTS when you send a DTS signal to it. On the display of your receiver, you should also see the five corresponding speaker icons light up.
I'm not sure if there is an "older version" of DTS. I think the DTS codec is just the DTS codec. Either way, your receiver will be able to decode it without any problems. When I listen to a DTS track on my Yamaha RX-V765, the word DTS pops up on my receiver display as well as the five speakers and subwoofer icons. My receiver does not say "DTS Digital". It just says DTS. Your 665 is pretty much the same as my 765 so it should function the same way. |

I can only get 5.1 if I decode with nero6 otherwise only 2 channel no matter what settings I use on receiver or player. Tried other BD discs and looked at input signal as Beef told me and they tell me what I want to see (what I picked on the audio selection on BD) Moody Blues and ZZ top are the only 2 I tried but they worked perfect. Just not Eric and Steve. Thanks for help. Grant.
