Default Only PCM through new RX-V665?

Just got a new Yamaha RX-V665.Hooked it up to FIOS HD dvr and Samsung BD1500 using HDMI cables. It seems the only audio decoder setting I can get out of the receiver from both boxes is PCM.I've tried all the settings I could try in the yammys menus to no avail.I have a RX-V465 hooked up on another set and I get Dolby Digital form FIOS, and all the new decodes,etc.,DTS-HD Master ,,from it no problem.Any Ideas?I have the BD-1500 set to bitstream(audiophile) in its setup menu.

Thanks,
DanD

Something must be off in your settings. The 665 has all lossless codecs, and it should work if everything is connected and set correctly.

On the Samsung...audio output should be set to bitstream also secondary audio should be set to off...as for the fios box I think you will only get DD...

With unexpected PCM outputs, the HDMI handshake with the TV is often to blame. TVs are two channel devices and sometimes the HDMI negotiation forces a two channel PCM downmix.

Try turning off HDMI audio in your player or receiver. Or, simply unplug the HDMI cable between the TV and the receiver and see if that fixes the problem.

I don't think Samsungs have a secondary audio setting. But, Bitstream Audiophile (the setting being used here) does not include secondary audio.

Besides, while secondary audio mixing may induce a player to use a legacy codec instead of a lossless one, I've never heard that it produces a PCM output when a player is set to bitstream. That's what's being described here.

Yes,the Blu-ray box is set to bitstream(audiophile),I also tried its bitstream(re-encode) setting with the same results.
There is a disclaimer in the Bluray manual saying:
If your TV is not compatible with compressed multi-channel formats(Dolby digi,DTS etc) or not compatible with PCM sampling rates over 48kHz the BR box may output down sampled PCM audio even though you set PCM down sampling to off.
Perhaps my Sharp is not compatible?
Would older HDMI cables cause any of these problems? These are around 2 years old I think,I may need to upgrade.

thanks,
DanD

Hey, Dan. You've posted this question on at least three different sites, but don't seem to be reading the responses. That note in your manual says the HDMI handshake with a TV may force a PCM output instead of the multichannel output you are expecting. So, you need to remove the TV from the equation by doing as I suggested here and elsewhere.

No, cables will not cause the problem you describe.

The only reason a receiver will force a PCM issue, is if you have the hdmi audio being output to the tv...you need to turn hdmi audio out off.

Audio Output = AMP (not TV, not TV+AMP)

Yes sir but if you want audio passed to the TV with the receiver off set "Standby Through" or whatever it's called to "On" Then it will pass the audio and video to the TV when the receiver is off, great at night if you don't want to run the receiver.

Of course. But, there are trade-offs with some equipment combinations. It seems likely that the OP cannot set his receiver to do both 5.1 and pass-through for TV audio.

He should be able to run it this way if he wants audio to the speakers with the receiver on and audio to the TV with the receiver off. They are separate options in the 665...although it may still cause problems but I wouldn't think so

And what do you suppose will happen when he turns on his receiver? Does the HDMI handshake from player to TV only happen when the AVR is in standby, not when it's on? Why would you think that's the case? It would be great for people who want that option if it works that way.

Not sure to be honest I would hope that when the receiver is on it just takes over audio duties with "AMP only" selected (crackinhedz suggestion as well) thus removing the TV audio settings from the mix. When it's off and "Standby Through" is turned on then it will feed video and audio from the source to the TV just in case he wants to watch TV without all the speakers running.

Of course I could be blowing smoke out of my butt too

Glad you got it fixed. I guess I wasn't as clear as Crackinhedz. That's the solution I was suggesting - remove the HDMI handshake with the TV. I just didn't give you the specific receiver setting to use.

Glad it's worked out Are you getting audio through the TV with "Standby Through" enabled and the receiver turned off?
