Default Downloading in background rules?

ok need some insight.

I know you can't DL while watching movies.

But I can't figure out what the rules are when DLing behind video games.

I have started a DL, then popped in a game only to pause the game and see the % hasn't moved. I quit the game and it immediatly starts going up again. Meanwhile other times it goes in the background just fine and I get the message when it is done.

So what is it?

You can DL in background when playing a online game, like Burnout, because it piggy backs the info.

or You can only do it with an offline game because it needs the bandwith for the download?

That new Borderlands DLC is huge and will take me hours, I don't want to be playing a game for a few hours only to find it stopped downloading.

Thanks.

if you're signed in to PSN but not in multiplayer or an online game it will continue to download i think is how it works - once you start using bandwith for a game you're playing it pauses all downloads

It's strange alright. I think it's riciulous that you get signed out of the PSN while watching a blu-ray. I really don’t understand that. Fine, you don’t want to have pop ups during films (friends logging in and out etc) but cant you turn this off?

Why are we logged out of the PSN during films and gaming? Gaming online might be slower if you are downloading in the background? Sure, but during a film? What is the point?

I don't really 100% know what I'm talking about, but I think downloading would use up some processing power too although very little. And even though it probably wouldn't conflict with games, maybe it would with some more intense games?

Just a thought.

Why not just have the DLC download overnight? Just use the system auto-off feature to turn off the game once it is downloaded. That is what I do when I download large demos, etc.

A good suggestion funsocaltiger, unfortunately it is currently in my bedroom and I am a very light sleeper. It will keep me up while it's running, otherwise I'd do that. Hoping to get a better place soon, so that will be a option.

not being able to download while gaming is surely a performance issue for a game itself, ignoring whether or not the game is using the connection too.

it makes no sense though to not be able to download during DVD and Blu-ray playback. I know it doesn't take everything a PS3 has, to play a Blu-ray.

One reason I heard once was that for Blu-rays it was to maintain BD Live capability. I think that was just speculation though.

not...play...on my...ps3? I don't understand these words together.

lmao.

seriuosly though, it does limit what I can do. We have already established that while it is DLing I can't watch movies, and if I play City of Heroes on the computer it will just slow down the already slow download.

I plan on maxing out the DSL speed when I move since I don't bother with cable/tv.

until then however, is snails pace for me.

start the download at night with the auto turn-off feature, then unplug the hdmi cable and put it as far away as you can from you, like outside your door with the power cord coming out the bottom.

lol.

Background downloads is definitely on a case-by-case basis. Most any game that has an online gameplay element automatically disallows background downloads (i.e. Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2). Games which do not access network services, on the other hand, tend to allow it (inFamous, Super Stardust HD).

I tend to fire up one of my PSN games or inFamous when I want to download things in the background while playing something.

For the MOST part, when you're playing a game online against other people, it will stop your download to save bandwidth.

When you're playing offline, it'll download.

It will download during movies that are NOT on disc (saved on HDD/USB).

It's really dependent upon what utilities your game uses.

Well it lets you DL if your streaming to the PS3 with PS3 Media Server I do it all the time. But won't let you when watching a disc based movie. I just usually let it go overnight and have it set for 5 hours and it will turn off.

Well, as it is now, it's not a sentence because it has no verb. If you change the question mark to an exclamation point, "rules" becomes the verb, making the thread title a proper sentence.

I never understood why you can't Background DL while watching a Blu Ray movie. Also I'm not entirely sure if it'll background download while playing a PS1/PS2 game (whether on disc or not).

Some games have mp components but won't background DL while you play the SP component (I believe GTA IV is guilty of this).
