Angry no surround!

I have a ps3, pioneer vsx-918v, and a 42" sharp aquos. I have a HDMI cable running from my ps3 to my pioneer, then a HDMI cable from the pioneer to the tv. Picture is great but for some reason I will not receive full surround from the speakers, only the 2 fronts and sub have output. PS3 audio settings are set to HDMI with dts and dolby digital both checked. PLEASE HELP!

Do you have the receiver on the direct setting (auto/direct button on the remote)?

...then you have a receiver setup issue. Perhaps speaker wires not in correct? or you did not tell your receiver you are using surrounds?

in the receiver settings, you need to change HDMI to AMP (not THRU). pg.35 user manual

would sound retriever cause that? I"m kinda grasping at straws now, as I own that model as well and if they are all on and so is bitstream, not really a reason for it to not work.

It would play absolutely no sound if its set to thru. He has 2.1, which makes it confusing.

Unhappy ps3 surround?

Hi all,

First of thanks in advance for any assistance in solving my issue. I currently have an Olevia 237-S11 37" TV, a Sony DAV-HDX285 home theater and my PS3. I have it connected this way: HDMI from PS3 to TV, Digital Optical to HT and setting in PS3 changed to HDMI/Optical and multi on....HT set to Pro-Logic, HT is connected to TV by yellow video line. I get surround from HT and normal sound from PS3...am I missing something?? Thanks again for any help!!!

Default PS3 DTSMA and DDTHD clarification

I'm looking to clarify I'm utilizing my setup correctly.

I have a Denon AR-3806 which does have HDMI 1.1 but does not decode the new DD and DTSMA codecs. Running my PS3 slim via HDMI with LPCM out.

Will this get me DTSMA and DDTHD? The display on the Denon says Multi Ch In, the PS3 info screen says DTSMA etc., but at only 48khz. The overall sound is fine but seems quieter than the old DD and DTS.

I just want ot make sure it's operating at it's best. I know there is a million threads on this but alot of them are older or not specific to my receiver etc.

Thanks for the help!

So the fact that it's only HDMI 1.1 is ok? And the PS3 does now decode the DTS HD MA?

PCM over HDMI was supported from the get go. You are fine. Things you do loose are things like Deep Color, bitstreaming is HD audio codecs and lip sync.

Your what hurts!? You lost me. Not sure what any of that means. I asked about DTS because I had read here that initially PS3 didnt decode DTS MA but that it was coming. Just never saw where it definitively had arrived. ALso thought I heard that HDMI 1.3 was required for the true audio effect. Maybe that was for bitstreaming to the AVR to decode?

dts-MA decoding was added to the PS3 via firmware update the better part of two years ago. The PS3 slim has had it from the start.

HDMI 1.1 is all you need for multichannel PCM. 1.3 provides bitstream support for the new codecs. But, since you're decoding in the player, HDMI 1.1 is just fine. The player decodes and outputs multichannel PCM.

btw, 48kHz is the norm for Blu-ray discs. That's the way most movies are mastered to begin with. A handful have 96kHz encodes and a few are 192. The PCM output of most players is usually a few dB lower than the bitstreamed output of a receiver.
