Minus a few of their upper tier dacs, nothing really. I would say cost is the main factor very cheap. There are so many better DACs out there. I'm getting the 83SE this week, with cutting edge SABRE 32 dacs..4 for each analog channel. I use 2 channel only, so the SE is the way to go for me.. But a good dac is just one part of the picture.. A good dac won't magically turn your system into audio nirvana if the other components are not up to the t task. Alot of external DACs like the DAC1/Larvy/GD19 etc, are better then a lot of highly priced receivers with 'ok' sounding BB dacs.. But all external DACs support 2 channel stereo only, so it really defeats the purpose of taking advantage of digital audio with 5.1 to 7.1 of discrete channels for movies and HD audio support. How immersive is 2.1 stereo when watching blu ray? Not much. That why I own both a receiver and external DAC. My TH system is headphone based anyway's... Part is preference, other is living situation.

While I think the better DACs did make a difference in the sound, most likely the majority of the difference is from the much better amp section of the 5007. The 806s amp section was gutted compared to the 805 it replaced.

The Onkyo 805 is much better than the 806. 806 had NO BURR BROWN DACS.That's why everyone is looking for 805's. Everything after the 805/875, had some other dacs in them. GLAD I got an 805 on launch day in 2006...tons of power, just ask my 4 blown sub amps! The 5007 doesn't hold a candle to the 805.

I'm thinking of getting a Pioneer Elite SC-27 which boasts Burr-Brown DAC's and was wondering the same thing. I'n a newbie when it comes to being an audiophile and have alot of questions. Does anyone know if Blue-Ray Players can play SACD's?

Some Blu-ray players can play SACD. All Oppo models play SACD, and certain Sony models. The early iterations of the PS3 also play SACD.

When a signal is in it's digital form, it remains clean and untouched so to speak. But once it gets converted to analog, some DAC's are just better than others and not much quality is lost when a high end DAC is doing the job. Someone correct me if I'm mistaken or if it can be elaborated on more. |
