Default Is there a big announcement coming from the BDA?

Is there any truth in rumours that by the end of this week there will be a big announcment from the BDA regarding exclusives with other production companies. I have read bits and bobs here and there, but no real clarification. Was kinda worried at first, when Paramount ( the losers ) jumped ship, but I now think Blu-ray is still an outright winner.

I wish, but I am not holding my breath. I think they are probably in a daze right now with Paramounts decision.

Who's in a daze? Outsiders (you and me) maybe, but I assure you the BDA people are not wasting their time being in daze. It's their job to deal with stuff like this.

I remember reading on the insiders thread that the BDA did know about this. I hope they've been working on a plan of attack to counter Paramount's move as well.

Correction, they did not know about this deal until it was too late to stop it. M$ probably first lined the pockets of top execs privately to make sure everything stays quiet long enough.

I'm sure they started making plans as soon as they found out about the Para***** deal (the Fox announcement timing was spot on) and I'm sure they had some plans from before that they are still diligently working on.

I know studios try to spread out releases of new videos, but with the excellent libraries of 20th fox, disney and sony, If I was to mount some sort of massive title bombing, Just start releasing 50-100 or more titles a month, get the consumers to spend all their money on blu-ray, then when transformers and shrek does come out, any gains from that(as far as sales numbers) would be neutralized!!

You won't have to go that far though.

Raratouille will outsell Shrek.
Spider Man 3 AND POTC 3 combined, will definetely outsell Transformers by large.

With Paramount being exclusive, but Fox back...I'll predict we'll see the same Blu-advantage in Nielsen as before.

However - the Slam Dunk Win by Blu (that many predicted), will not happen in a foreseeable future.

I can't wait for Fox's Die Hard flicks on Blu.

No, Shrek 3 was not that great at all, and received poor reviews mainly here in the UK. I just don't see Shrek 3 and Transformers selling HD-DVD players by the bucket load, here in Europe, as everyone is still confused about which format to choose, although Blu-ray is the leader. Once people see classic films like Die hard, ID4 etc on a rival format, they will stay away, until there is an outright winner. The majority for now, are happy with Shrek on DVD, I honestly can't see families, buying their kids a HD-DUD player, just to watch Shrek. Except for Transformers, there is no major headlinig release from Paramount/Dreamworks, what will seriously shift players. And with retailers, offering great deals on the PS3 now, here in the UK, more Blu-ray, will be in homes this xmas. I myself was worried at first, when Paramount announced their betrayal, but looking seriously at the bigger picture, Blu-ray, is still in a very healthy position, and can see a very bright future for Blu-ray. I don't seriously see HD downloads being a serious format, for a long long time, as broadband capabilities, are still very poor.

If you noticed any of the insider posts, it looks like the BDA knew this was coming for a while. I am almost certain that is why FOX held off any announcement. How else do you think they were ready to fire back so quickly with the news of all the titles they were to release the rest of the year? Plus, didn't anyone think it was unusual that Disney put out a release schedule for movies well over a year in advance? That got people excited. I don't think there is any other news forthcoming unfortunately. But, with FOX back in the game they are ready to fight. Looking back at the news from earlier this week, yeah I am pissed that I won't be able to get the BD version of Transformers or possibly the upcoming Beowulf that is coming out this Christmas at the theaters. HD DVD needed some exclusive family friendly stuff, so they bought out Paramount and Dreamworks and Universal didn't have anything but those crappy Land Before Time sequels.

Just continue to show your allegience to Blu by purchasing movies and things should be fine for now. There are tons of exclusives coming this Fall and Winter so start working that over time at your jobs and blow all of it on Blu-Ray movies!

The initial result has been people buying up existing Paramount titles like hotcakes, so that's been a good thing ironically.

News of PS3's DVR capability will sell Blu Ray players (in the form of PS3's) and I am thrilled about this news about convertion of films to 3D which could be pretty awesome.

There is only one announcement that would top the Paramont one, imo, WB going exclusive to BD. I personally don't see that as most seem to think WB favors HDDVD. However the worst possible news would be that WB goes HDDVD as well. That would be tough to swallow.

As far as I am concerned, there are only two ways this war ends:

1. Bluray wins, and HDDVD slowly exits shelves and minds like DIVX did

or

2. Both formats Coexist. The technological advances Bluray gives and allows far are far too good to ignore and let die, whether it be from a cinematic standpoint, or from a personal computing standpoint.

Seriously, why is everyone so bent out of shape about Transformers? What did you really like about the movie besides the title? Aside from the few closeups of Bumblebee and Optimus, you could hardly see the robots, the story line was not very faithful to the original cartoon, and per usual Bay included a love story where there did not need to be one. As an action movie, it still wasn't even close to being as good as the Bourne Ultimatum or the Potter movie even.
