PS3 Hard Drive Upgrade Problem

In the process of upgrading the hard drive the screws stripped. I tried getting the hard drive out anyway and bent the hell out of the drive plate that you use to slide it back into place. I figured oh well i'll just put the hard drive in without the plate. Now when i boot it up i get no picture or anything.

Anyone had this issue, my assumption is the system needs that drive bay in there, when it slides into place it tells the system its good to go. The machine boots fine without any drive in there, it just says no readable drive installed upon boot.
