A few days ago, Brian Ziel of Seagate stopped by the office to show us how easy it is to swap out the hard drive on the Playstation 3.
Piece of cake.

OK, nice post and rather than me open up a whole new thread, i'll add my question to this one.

Would this HDD be compatible with my PS3, i know it's a 2.5" SATA laptop HDD but there may be some other factors too, so could any of you help

250 Gb Fujitsu MHX2250BT Notebook, 2.5", SATA150, 4200 rpm, 8MB Cache, 12 ms
Above is the HDD i want to use

Thanks for response but was just wondering if there was ANY case at all where a 2.5" SATA HDD did not work with a PS3 and i don't mean where some1 fried the HDD b4 installing it without grounding themselves lol

I rarely ground myself and have never had any problems over the last 12 years. The only time I do ground myself is when the air is dry and static easily builds up. I had no problem when I did my upgrade it only took a few minutes. What took time was backing up the old hard drive and restoring it to the new one. But at least the PS3 has a process to backup and restore everything which made the upgrade process that much better.

I'm pretty efficient with deleting stuff I don't need so I've still got a good 35+ GB's left. I'll probably upgrade after the 1-year GB warranty's up.

Upgrading the hard drive will not void the warranty.

Lol. Unlike you, I'm terrible with deleting stuuff. I feel I need all of it lol. And untill my hdd is out of space I don't think I will delete stuff. Hell, I got the GTHD Concept twice. v1.2 and v2.0. I see no difference but Irl just keep em both lol.

And if your not upgrading because u think it will void the warrenty, it dont. Its safe lol, tho you have to send the ps3 back with the original HDD. So dont sell it lol.

The only reason I can really see is odd-size.

But this is a 2.5 we're talking about. That means they are intending them to go in Laptops, and it needs to be the standard form factor, so that shouldn't even be an issue. If it doesn't fit, I think ya got full right to complain to the point of purchase/manufacturer.

Yeah its a new HDD. Its the biggest out of 2.5''. 2.5'' Sata is all you need to know. Thats it. 2.5 Sata. It will fit. From 20GB to a millionGB if its a 2.5 sata, it will fit.

It should work the only thing to keep in mind is the OEM drive is 5400 rpm and you'll be downgrading to 4200 rpm. Not sure if that will have any effect on how things work....I wouldn't think so but you never know...

Hmm, didn't realize that, that's a really low time. That'll affect load times of anything going to or from the hd [Saving primarily], especially for stuff thta actually needs to seek.

On the plus side, it produces less noise, less heat, and it had a bigger storage.

BTW is the cache 8mb on the original HDD? I think it is but it could be less.

But if a game relies on streaming from the harddisk, it may cause problems so I'd get a replacement drive of at least equal specs to the drive included in the PS3.

If the cache is bigger then the original HDD. It could equal out, if not, I totally agree with Shin.

I'd be inclined to check out reviews that actually tested seek time and the sustained continuous transfer rate rather than relying on manufacturer specs for anything.

True. You never know with specs. And I think it will need a good speed as the Cell eats information so fast.

Than you for all the replies, i was just wondering whether the RPM of 5400 vs 4200 really was a factor in choosing or it was fininding a HDD with a similar cache and response time of 12ms that really mattered.

I ask this because i thought the cache and response time was actually a factor in the HDD being able to access the data quick enough rather than the RPM.
