Default What's with boiling discs?

I have seen numerous references here to "boiling" hd-dvds before playing them. I did a search and didn't find any explanation. What is the reason for doing that? Is that a slang term or are people literally boiling them in water?

It's from a true-life solution the HD-DVD supporters/fanatics have found to get their HD-DVD combo discs to play. Apparently there is some wax layer or something that had stayed on. It should've been rinsed off at the replicating line.

So rinsing them in hot water seemed to have worked. Some of them went the extra mile with boiling hot water. Hence the story stuck. If you think I'm making it up, well truth is stranger than fiction.

^ But is distilled water required? Or is R-O filtered water good enough?

fwiw... sounds like the stupidest thing EVER... you'd think plastic would melt if you stuck it in 211 degree water... glad we don't have that problem. combo discs are for the weak.

Universal has the same issue with the dual layer double sided discs that were used in the dvd tv sets. I think its probably not thick enough to support the that many layers. I personally despise them as they get scratched too easliy and are not kid friendly at all.

I guess all HD DUD combo disks should come with cooking instructions just like 360's should come with free towels.

I just thought you boil them to remove any inherent virus that the HD DVD standard may contain

There's actually a thread about HD-DVD boiling over at AVS if you want to check it out. I just think it's funny nobody said something to the point of, "Wow, this is pretty fuc*ing ridiculous that I have to do this, maybe there's something not quite right." It really amazes me how anyone can be a diehard HD-DVD supporter with the facts that are out there. I liken it to buying a car with 55 horsepower that gets 8 mpg. There's no positive trade off.

sad to say it does work. My copy of 40 yr old virgin was giving me fits, always locking up on the same part at the beginning. I ran it under water that was almost to hot to hold the disc under, dryed it off and it has worked flawlessly since. This Disc gets repeated play by my family (a big hit with us) so I'd say it's not a fluke...especially considering that before this, i couldn't get past the opening scene on several try's in my HD-A1 & 360.
As I rinsed it with the Uber Hot water i could see a clear film deteriorating and the disc got shinier as the hot water ate through it. Took all of about 30 seconds to get it all off, it was invisible to the naked eye until the steam from the hot water made it evident. Trust me, I thought it was just as ridiculous until I gave it a shot...before this, I continued to have problems with this disc and I really wanted to watch it....did the hot rinse, and it actually worked! This was the face I made:
This muct be how those alien abductee's feel, lol. But seriously...it's real.

It's basically the same thing people had to do with some original Xbox discs. Kinda funny that this problem/solution krept up with another Microsoft backed product.
