Default ps3

When it comes down to internet i don't know what to believe one site says ps3 doesn't support 1080p like //digg.com and another like www.kotaku.com says it does. All the machines really need is upscaler like dvdo

Why don't PS3 and blu-ray quit stalling so people can enjoy themselves

Mosy probably because they don't want to go broke. If they had to recall every machine due to a poorly tested component that would cost a fortune - not to mention the damage to their reputation. I can assure you Sony and co want to release ASAP so they can get a return on their investment, sure they want to maximise their profits and may sit on something for a short time but with PS3 & Blu Ray - with the competition they will release as soon as they can. They may have passsed the testing phase and now be stock piling. As this is new technology, it's not only the hardware that needs to be in supply, but also the software. I'm sure in 16 weeks or less and you will be able to get a blu ray player - I'm not prepared to predict the PS3.

Talking

Thats the problem Blue, if Sony wants the consumer to wait 16 months I can honestly say that is exactly what is going to hurt PS3 sales, most familys will will consider the the Xbox because it is out and the bugs will already be worked out were as the PS3 needs to get the product out so that the consumer can find those problems and address them from there. The concept being the more homes Sony loses to Xbox the less impact PS3 is going to have. The less impact PS3 has the less impact Blue-Ray will have, it's a Slippry-Slope. Just my observation,

Doesnt matter if PS3 plays 1080p... hardly any sets can accept a 1080p input so thats a moot point.

Not quite, PS3 will not stay here for a measly one or two years, but for at least 6 years. And till then I'm certain 1080p TV Sets and Blu-ray will be THE norm.

from the initial information about PS3 up till now, it was known that it'd support TWO 1080p outputs simultaneously. it has the hardware, and that ain't changing.

now wether or not it'd make good use of that hardware in regards to bluray playback, i can't comment. one thing is certain, if they chose to limit their player software to 720p/1080i it won't be because of the lack of hardware capabilities, only some "political" reasons (like to not overshadow standalone players etc). i kinda doubt that could happen, but if it did there will eventually be some linux player running 1080p just fine on the PS3.

Moderator's note: You are free to prefer HD DVD over Blu-ray but do not alter someone's post in a quote. We would welcome your taking the time to discuss why you prefer HD DVD but we will not tolerate blatant trolling. - nyg

What about the possibility of the ps3 using some kind of remote-related device?

i.e. both the xbox and ps2 had dvd remotes. for the ps2 it was kind of a convenience thing, but with the xbox you had to buy the remote in order to use the thing as a dvd player.

could sony not implement a similar system where the standard-issue ps3 is restricted to 720p, but if you buy the "blu-ray remote" then you can watch movies at 1080p?

i'll admit the remote was one of the main reasons i was turned off of the xbox, whereas having the ps2 work as a dvd player right out of the box was not an insignificant factor in my decision to purchase one. at the time i bought my ps2 i was in a position where i wanted a dvd player, but i had the option to get the ps2 at about the same price. that same thing appears to be happening with blu-ray, only it looks as though the ps3 will be considerably cheaper than any of the standalone blu-ray players, so this time around it's an even easier choice. that being said, i wouldn't freak out if they put a remote on the market that cost as much as 200 bucks, because it'd still put the whole package at a lower pricepoint than regular blu-ray player. i figure most people would want a remote, anyway, and this would give them even more incentive to buy one. i still think it's a bit of a shrewd move, but it doesn't reek of evil in the same way the xbox remote did.

of course, this doesn't necessarily address the issue of games in 1080p, but what the hell do i know, anyway?

I hope they don't.

I thought the whole "You have to buy the remote to make the Xbox's DVD playback work" was a needless cheapshot to the customer and a needless extra expense.

No, you're right on. This is where we come back to: Microsoft doesn't know anything about home theater.

I would suspect that Sony will once again wisely have everything work out of the box and if you want a remote, great. If you don't, no problem. It would behoove them to keep things simple and neat. Customer friendly.
