Default Pioneer Elite VSX94TXH THX-EX dolby truehd receiver

In a few hours or I might wait till morning. I am going to order this receiver. Is this a future proof for the most part. I really like the ethernet connection for streaming. but want to make sure i'm not missing out on something else. I want to stay around 1000 price range. looking for 3+ Hdmi, 1080p pass thru. with over 100watts per channel. I've heard alot of talk about the Onkyo s805, how does that model compare to this one? Just got a little bit of cold feet before the actual purchase. thanks all.

Not sure, but I think there is a 95 out now. Might want to get that one instead.

You could also consider this one, Ive been very pleased with my Yamaha, and it appears to be future proof, if there is such a thing.

130w per channel, True HD and DTS HD MA decoding, 1080P upscaling of all inputs, 4 HDMI Inputs, although it doesnt appear to have an ethernet port. It can be found for under $1000 though.

Last year crackinhedz' and I participated in quite a few threads dedicated to the excellence of the Elite receivers, so I won't go into great details about them. I'm sure you can dig up some of those old threads with a little effort. Since the VSX-94TXH is the pinnacle of them all, I think it goes without saying that it's highly recommended. I can also honestly say that you don't have to worry about it being obsolete (it is quite "futureproof") anytime soon.

I've had the 94 since last August and in our family room home theater setup and absolutely love it! I looked at the Onkyo line and thought the 94 was hands down a better receiver in options as well as performance (IMHO). I was so impressed after a few months that I got it's littler brother, the VSX-92 TXH for the game room theater system I installed before Christmas. Enjoy!

Default You're gonna love it.

I bought a VSX52THX 3 or 4 years ago after my Panasonic decided that I didn't need to hear the front two channels any more. I absolutely love my Elite. I won't get anything else next time. I sure wish I could justify the new 94, but I feel as though my 52 is just getting house broken. Last week, I was futzing around with it and figured out how to rename the display for inputs! (yeah, I know RTFM).

Anyway, with Crackinhead's help, I now have extremely good audio from my Panny-BD30 using the 5.1 inputs (and they're labeled Blu-ray it's soo cool). The 94 would definately get my money today, IF I could convince myself that I needed a new receiver. However, I can't find anything wrong with my 52 - for now... I do like the ethernet connection for streaming media, and upgrades.

Let us know when you get it, and how YOU like it.

I replaced my VSX-84TXSi with the 94TXH because of the HD codecs! I have no regrets!

Default Audio Options Opinions

I hope this finds someone who can help me. I've looked through this forum without any luck on answering my question so if there is already a discussion that one of you knows about please let me know.

Generally, I watch movies using the standard DolbyTrueHD or DTS-MA formats on my Pioneer Elite VSX-94 receiver and that's all fine and dandy. What I was wondering was about the THX options. I was just watching Transformers and wasn't sure if I was better off using the standard TrueHD or if selecting the THX EX feature was better because it says it is still TrueHD just with the added THX. I don't have any special THX speakers but I wouldn't want to waste this setting if it does in fact make my movie watching/audio experience better. I did some tests of the various audio settings on the receiver and even though I have my own opinions about which was better, I don't exactly have the most trained ear. I also honestly thought THX was just a certification that movie theaters could get and as I have read here, NOT an actual audio format per say. There are actually several different options when hit both the THX and Standard buttons on the remote too. Has anyone else gone through these before? Any opinions/advice would help. Thanks a bunch!

I think the only advantage would be the THX could matrix 5.1 audio into 6.1/7.1

But, I'm not sure whether this is allowed when bitstreaming Dolby TrueHD and Dts-HD MA (I know it works for PCM signals)

I'm not sure if this was a limitation of older model receivers, or the Advanced audio formats themselves...perhaps BIslander will check out this post and add his knowledge.

As far as audio quality goes, there is probably no improvement since Dts-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD are the best they're gonna get.

Thanks. I'm not 100% sure how much that answered my question but it's a start. If you're saying that the THX feature is more for improving 5.1 than the HD audio that makes perfect sense that it wouldn't necessarily improve an HD audio format. Would I be correct in saying that it wouldn't make HD audio any worse? Obviously it's about what I hear and it's more subjective but there still ought to be a distinction between what's better and not from a technical standpoint that one you experts out there probably know.

Take a look at pp91-92 of the Pioneer manual. THX modes are designed to deal with issues that come up when translating mixes done for theatrical playback into a home environment. Here's the beginning of the explanation in the manual:

THX Cinema processing
THX is an exclusive set of standards and technologies established by
the world-renowned film production company, Lucasfilm Ltd. THX
grew from George Lucas’ personal desire to make your experience of
the film soundtrack, in both movie theatres and in your home theatre,
as faithful as possible to what the director intended. Movie
soundtracks are mixed in special movie theatres called dubbing
stages and are designed to be played back in movie theatres with
similar equipment and conditions. This same soundtrack is then
transferred directly onto Laserdisc, VHS tape, DVD, etc., and is not
changed for playback in a small home theatre environment. THX
engineers developed patented technologies to accurately translate
the sound from the movie theatre environment into the home,
correcting the tonal and spatial errors that occur. On this product,
when the THX indicator is on, THX features are automatically added
in Cinema modes (e.g. THX Cinema, THX Surround EX).
