Default Question about burning Blu-ray and piracy

Let's say I legally own a HD DVD copy of Transformers.

Then I record it into a Blu Ray.

And I then sell the Blu-Ray "back-up" along with the Legal HD DVD copy.

Legal?

I'm guessing no.

I believe it's illegal because you had to break the (however flimsy) copy protection on the HD DVD, which is illegal...

If I'm legally allowed to rip a CD that I own and put the songs onto a MP3 player, why can't I rip a HD DVD and burn that? Don't I own the license too not just the media for some limited amount of backups?

Assuming you're in the USA, it would be a DMCA violation. You don't have to break encryption to copy a CD, so it's legal, but the same is not true for DVD, BD, or HD-DVD.

It's an interesting point though isn't it, it's illegal to break the encryption but not technically illegal to own a broken copy so long as you own an original?

So the person making the copy could be in trouble but maybe you wouldn't be if you had bought it and the original off them?

It is also illegal to pay companys under the table and stop competition like Microsoft just did and always does. So screw Paramount. I will pirate the hd-dvd and turn it into a blu-ray and they can suck it. The disc will make great xmas presents!

One thing MANY people seem to miss... to PLAY a DVD/HD DVD/Blu-ray, it has to be decrypted!
Therefore, we *ALL* are breaking the "law" when we play a disc.

Here is something else to ponder... if it can be played, it can be recorded/copied.
Intercept the signal/stream that is destined for the screen, hit record!

As to selling the burned BD... that is probably a no-no!
Keeping it for personal use, go for it!

No, you're not. Because using a player is not BREAKING a copy protection system. It's using the system.

The law specifically says an end user with an unauthorized device. A licensed BR player is an authorized device

It should not be illegal, since you are allow to make backup copies of original copy. So as long as you own the original you can make a copy, but you cannot sell teh copy, you would have to sell both together, just like you said.

The DMCA trumps fair use. If you have to break the protection to copy it, it is illegal

In order to rip an HD DVD you need a reader for your computer. If you spent the money on a HD DVD drive for the computer why not just spend that money on the regular player? Or why not just get an external HD DVD drive usb/firewire and connect your laptop to your HDtv? I dont get how ripping HD DVD and burning it to BD is worth anything..

Using the addon (sells used for under 100 bux) or downloading the full HD DVD rips from the internet is your call. Either way, you can convert any MPEG2/VC-1 HD DVD disc to blu-ray with 0 loss of anything (we've gotten King King HD DVD onto a BD25, and that disc is 29.4 gigs and NO extras). AVC is still being worked on, since HD DVD used a funky AVC but rest assured it will happen. Although it probably wont matter much, since im sure part of the Paramount/Microsoft payoff was that they stop using AVC and go VC-1 and lossy audio.

Xbox 360 addon. Plug it in via USB and UDF 2.5 drivers for XP (Vista automatically has it), run AnyDVD HD, seconds later you are ripping any HD DVD disc in existance. The format is cracked for the LIFE of the format, so no need to be worried at all about problem discs that wont copy, it can never happen.
