Default The Only Way The Format War Will End.

the only way the format war will end is if every major studio went nuetral. then consumers could decide which format they want based on the format itself not the movies on the format.

That's not the ONLY way it can end... in fact that might make it last even longer

Another way would be for all studios to go exclusive one way or the other. About as much chance of happening soon as your idea...

Default It be nice

That would be nice, I'm sure most people prefer Blu-ray (at least that's what the numbers show).

I think it all really depends on WB now, they really should pick a side (and I really hope they pick our side). It's also possible that WB will remain neutral, we'll see what Paramount does 18 months from now. I've been thinking that when the deal expired, Paramount will return to Blu-ray.

^^^ I agree, this is getting frustrating but this is when/how character is defined. I'm in it 'till it's over.

As for what the OP said, I don't think that would end it. Only because, BD sales have repeatedly demonstrated where the consumers are, and that apparently wasn't enough for Paramount/Dreamworks/Universal/Warner.

I do however, feel that if all studios went neutral, then it would be a price war--more so than now--and that would lead to the end of the format war. So I guess, in the end, yes, that would end it.

Wouldn't do anything except confuse consumers, piss off retailers, and just create even more anamosity between formats.

Retailers aren't exactly happy about having to provide shelf space for the two formats as it is and that is with little crossover in titles. Right now they are putting out basically two seperate titles. A DVD and a Blu-ray or HD DVD. Only Warner titles are being tripple and it isn't even all Warner titles as most Blu-ray people know. Now imagine that they need to basically increase that to 3 versions of every title. The retailers won't put up with it, they'll most likely just quit on one format, or only put out the most recent titles. Forget about picking up a title that has been out for more than a month.

There's a chance the war could end in advance of 100% studio support for either format: if overall HDM sales improve, the gap in market share widens sufficiently and retailers just drop the weaker format.

Say that BD outsells HD-DVD 3:1 for twelve consecutive weeks at retail and sales are starting to get "respectable," i.e. volumes satisfy some predetermined minimum. Perhaps that performance gap would be enough to incline a retailer just to call time on the war (in their outlets).

If a customer objects that movie X or studio Y isn't available on the winning format the reply could simply be, "That hasn't been released on Blu-ray yet," the expectation being that sooner or later it will be. It would be reasonable for the retailer to take this attitude since (in the immortal words) for them, the war is over.

Or maybe it would take a 4:1 difference for sixteen weeks before the loser gets relegated. (Provided, again, the sales gap becomes meaningful in absolute terms -- unlike the situation now where BD outsells HD-DVD 2:1 but that difference is only a handful of units). In any case it's not unthinkable that the war could end even if Universal and Paramount stay where they are.

If every Studio would go neutral, dumb people would only buy HDDVD, because of its cheapness...

They could end the format war sooooo easy...

Warner --> Blu-ray exclusive

and that´s it...

Regardless of what may actually happen in reality, that is an interesting thought. That would at least in some regard be putting it in the consumer's hands to choose which way they would rather go it everything were on both formats. And in a perfect world blu-ray would destroy HD-DVD in sales and then this format war would be over and we (as consumers) can enjoy blu ray without any added irritation from the other format.

I am sorry, I don't think that ends the format war. I don't know what consumers would do, but if all studios being neutral meant all encodes for both formats were the same resulting in identical quality, I would think that could win it for HD DVD. That would neuter Blu-ray. The war was on its way to being over until Paramount messed it up. Now it will drag on indefinitely. Warner going Blu-ray exclusive and Universal going neutral would end it.

Nah the format war will end whenever $ony's whole company folds from too many losses in the near future.

Default To victory or defeat, we fight till the very end!!

I do regret buying a blu-ray player sometimes, and even "joining" this war. I did enter the battlefield though, so now I fight till the very end. Blu-ray all the way!!

...like I've said in other posts, lets think positive, even if Blu-ray looses, we'll still be able to watch them on combo players, which will be cheaper later on. Blu-ray will win though.

Some of you are right, retailers will get annoyed, some already are, which is why many have decided to stick to one format and little retailers still carry only DVDs. In the end it might depend on the retailers, and which ever format they choose to sell.

(This sounds like an all out war, )

I think it will probably take the retailers to do the right thing and eventually drop the weaker selling format (i.e., HD DVD). I'm hoping after Christmas they will make a move as there is no way even with Paramount than HD DVD is going to beat Blu-ray in sales. I really don't trust the studios to do the right thing - as I feel most of them are potential *****s - some are actual *****s, of course, like Paramount. If a retailer like Best Buy were to go Blu-ray exclusive, this would be a bigger hit to HD DVD than Universal or Warner going Blu-ray exclusive IMO.

warner is the key. whoever gets exclusivity from them would more than likely win.

The format would end MUCH faster if all studios went Blue. In fact, it'd be over right away if that happened.

it's time some people stop being proud and accept defeat (M$, Toshiba, Universal I'm looking at you!), isn't the business goal to win money?

One HUGE problem with every studio going neutral is that they would, as has been the case with Warner and Paramount (until just before their switch), cater to the lowest demoninator, that being HD DVD. The cost of creating a version optimized for both formats for a relatively small market would probably be too much to expect. I'd rather have the format war than have my Disney or Fox releases suck.

but every studio would have to agree on blu and with paramount going to hd-dvd exclusive that possibility came to a close but yes if all studios decided to go blu then for sure we will see every movie in blu but paramount just had to be a bunch of idiots and made things more complicated then they already are
