Default What will end the format war?

FTW w/ blu-ray.

1. Universal neutrality
2. 10 million PS3s sold by years end.
3. Star Wars and Pixar movies exclusive
4. xbox 360 blu-ray add on
5. 1440p TVs and players.

FTW or Tie w/ HD DVD

1. A 100 dollar player by xmas.
2. Disney or Fox switch sides.
3. Disney and Fox go neutral.
4. All Spielberg releases with Universal come out only for HD DVD.

Any more guys?

Spielberg releases on HD DVD wont make a tie. Spielberg's movies are older and people like new releases better. The only way it will be a tie is if a Blu-ray exclusive studio goes to HD DVD as well

I think the only disadvantage for Blu Ray is the current lack of titles, and I mean classic back catalog titles like the Bond Movies - although they are not available on HD DVD as well.

But the studios need to push this very fast. I see a lot of titles (and also some which are still coming) which are not really the 1st choice for many Blu Ray supporters. We would need the "big" ones, now!

I don't see a 100.00 HD DVD player by xmas being that big a deal...

not when the movies are that expensive....and anyone looking for a great deal will see the movie prices and say "no thanks"...

if they release too many movies right now, they will take a production hit that will take some time to recover from...

I think they could do a little bit better with putting out older movies along with the new releases...but even some of their supposed new releases aren't hitting the shelves like Da Vinci Code...shouldn't that have hit the shelves

even though I thought that movie could have been done alot better..

but if they released a few more titles like Batman Begins and the Spider-man movies, we'd see a much bigger margin and I think their gameplan is to wait for HD DVD to throw out their last "hurrah" and then squash them out with these new releases so the consumer can see all these "new" movies for BD that aren't out for HD DVD along with some of HD DVD's best titles that are on "our" format as well...

once the Matrix trilogy, Batman Begins, Spider-man 1+2 come out along with the newer movies in theaters that are Bd exclusive...we'll see a much wider margin of victory here....

I honestly think this format war could be all but over by this time next year...especially after the holidays..

1. I agree w/ this one, hope big billy hunt is right!!!
2. 10 million worldwide? eh, maybe it'll happen - and this only would work if SONY leverages the PS3 as a kick-ass movie player too - which I haven't seen yet.
3. If HD Dud is still around by then, I doubt Lucas would choose just BR.
4. That would help........
5. I doubt a slight tech advantage on displays would have a HUGE impact.

HDDUD:
1. go ahead and do a $100 player. Tosh is already hemmoraging assloads of $$$ on these players, let 'em hasten their demise.
2. switching sides? eh, maybe, but I doubt that would have an impact
3. Neutral would be even less of an issue than 2.
4. again, might give an edge, but wouldn't be the monkey in the wrench, so to speak.........

if Disney went neutral...they'd have to re-encode all of their BD releases...

Either BLU-RAY is going to win the format war or combo players for under $500 in late 2008 will cause both formats to coexist. Which every format gets 100% studio support first is going to win. All the BLU-RAY format needs to win is for Universal Studios to make the business decision to release in BLU-RAY. Then the BLU-RAY camp would have 100% studio support from all the major Hollywood studios.

Two Formats will never co-exist period. This is not like DVD-Audio VS Super Audio CD. As soon as Universal starts putting out movies on Blu Ray, the war is over and Toshiba can focus contributing something useful to the Home Theater again in the form of the SED TV. I heard here that SED TV's have been put on hold indeffinatly. Damn it! I want a 100,000:1 contrast ratio TV.

For the record I don't hate Toshiba I have

Toshiba TV and DVD player and I am impressed with them both

but when it comes to HD-DVD I am steaming

I wasn't saying that some of these have a slight chance of actually happening, however theortically if they did it would result in HD DVD coming back. No way Fox or Disney are going to switch sides.

I think the format war could actually be decided by people who don't even have enough money to buy Blu-Ray disks, let alone players. I am talking about 4-12 yr olds. Will parents of younger kid's even entertain the idea of buying an HD-DVD player? I think not.

Blu Ray Exclusive: Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., and the Pirates of the Carribean movies, Ice Age

O Yeah! The adults: The Rock, Sin City,Speed, Die Hard series, Star Wars (could go under childrens too)

but...but...but....hd dvd has the nutty professor series, liar liar (greatest transfer eva!), bruce almighty, and OMG BOURNE (hd dud fanboys think bourne is star wars level cause they have to, otherwise they realize hd dvd is DEAD)

disclaimer: bourne is good, but it isn't good enough to sell a player.

I agree this could be a biggie, but it would be executed best if sony gets the word out on the PS3's movie capabilities! Think about it - aren't those 4-12yr. olds ALREADY buggin' mom n dad for a PS3? so now mom n dad can kill two birds w/one stone, but i'll bet many don't even know about that, 'cause sony really isn't pushing the PS3 as a movie player.
