I got a PS3 because it was the best bang for my buck. A BD player, a media hub and a video game system.

Default Have 2 if laptops count

I got the Sony S300 just cause I got such a good deal on it, about $425. I have not had any issues with it, and it's not as bad as CNET puts it. It loads pretty quick; however, not the quickest and it lacks some things like the HD sound among other stuff. I'll get a better player once this format war is actually over

I also have a laptop with a built in Blu-ray drive, does a good job and can be plugged into a TV via HDMI. Now I just want a Blu drive on my desk top.

I agree. Truly great.

It will remain a Blu-ray player for me indefinitely. It's definitely the best value in A/V I've ever purchased.

ps3.

I will probably buy the Sharp player when it comes out though. I have been a Sharp fan through and through since my very first 15" TV set

PS3 here.

Bought it back in November with the launch craziness (camped out for it even.)

Have a 3 year warranty for it and would buy another one if it breaks after that. Unless a good deal on a better player is available at that time.

Many people told me it would explode if I plugged it in but it has never, ever, had any problems and I use it to watch a least 1 movie each day (for example watched Wild Things and Scooby Doo 2 so far today but plan to watch Trading Places tonight.) Usually something on Blu Ray but I've got lots of DVD's too.

I'd say if you can afford both do both, In our familys case we have our main entertaining room set up with the stand alone and in the less social parts(my room 1 ) we have a ps3, and our extra dlp we have our other ps3.. All depends

Johnnyd1,

I did burn a FW update disc for a friend that has the original stand alone the samsung that started the format.

I know that player doesn't compare to what's available now but that player is a hunk of junk compared to the PS3. It took several tries to load the FW (I gave up after 20 minutes but he eventually got it to work) and that FW was needed before he could load PotC.

Anyway,.. New standalone players are better but I don't think any of them play SACD yet and I bet few have the quick loading times that the PS3 has and PS3 does some upsampling for CD's (from what I've read,.. I don't use mine for CD's too often.)

Honestly,.. I don't know if standalone players have caught up to PS3 yet but I know PS3 was the best Blu Ray player in the past and it's likely the only thing available now that will meet the upcoming specs via FW update.

Currently, I just have a PS3. I'll likely get one of the Denon player and a new receiver once the come out, though.

Default Samsung BD-P1200

Bought my Samsung BD-P1200 back in March and I love it. The PQ is simply outstanding. It does a fantastic job of upconverting my standard DVDs thanks to the HQV video upconversion chip. I feel the PQ is fantastic on Blu Ray discs. I have applied one firmware upgrade to it so far and it handles great. No buyer's remorse at all. I talk up Blu-Ray and my Samsung all the time (and my Mitsubishi 57 inch DLP HDTV as well). The HQV chip is what gives this Blu Ray player it's added punch. Plus the price has come down over the past couple of months. I know 3rd generation players are just around the corner, but of the two new Samsungs, only one will have the HQV chip and that is the more expensive one. Quality shows. I love my Sammy!

Fair enough ! But I have the Sammy 1200 in the theater room and the PS3 upstairs in the living room and couldn't be happier with the Sammy...now if Sammy would/could update the audio via firmware...

Hi,

I may want a stand alone in the future because of the lower energy consumption and also since I crave the simplicity of the stand alone. So I'm not perhaps as "anti" stand alone as my posts here would imply.

My friend whom I helped with the FW loves his first gen Sammy and I was glad to help him I was just in a hurry on that day and thought that it wasn't working because of the type of CDR I put the FW on. I was surprized when he called back and said it worked.
