Default Need Some Help With PS3 And The Audio

I have a display for a component video connection (best available resolutuion is 1080i), no HDMI.

I can connect PS3 for the video that way but can I go HDMI from the PS3 to an AVR that has HDMI? Will it pass the audio for lossless since the display will not be connected to the AVR?

I have some conflicting input from folks that some AVrs will allow even though no connection to the display while others say this is not possible. I rather not just be stuck with optical for DD, DTS or PCM 2.0.

Any help would be apprceiated including which AVR may allow this! Thanks!

Stick with Optical or coax until you get a receiver that will do both HD audio formats. You'll have less problems. DTS is backwards compatible but most DD HD is not.

Yep. Pass audio via HDMI (let the PS3 auto configure your receiver's setting) and pass video via component (set it to 1080i).

Yes, you can connect PS3 to the HDTV with component, and use HDMI from PS3 to Receiver for audio.

I have my fathers PS3 set-up this way. He is using the Onkyo 605. You have to configure the HDMI input on the receiver, setting the "HDMI output" to OFF.

here are the settings you will need to make on the PS3...

Video: Settings - Display Settings - Video Output Settings - Component / D-Terminal

Audio: Settings - Sound Settings - Audio Output Settings - HDMI

...aslo

Settings - BD/DVD Settings - BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) - Linear PCM

I wanted to just say that I think that this is one of the many reasons why this is such a great site!

Somebody needs help or advice and the responses are great!

I know if I ever have a question, this is where I would come for help.

Wow and thanks, folks!

I have been reading alot about the Onyko 605 and it seems to be a great value for the buck! I think this is the one I'll go with since I now got a confirmation for a similiar connection configuration for the audio and video that I'll be using.

Never thought I'd see someone posting the settings I need to make on the PS3 with the screens included. Bravo!

You bet I'll be hanging out here lots more in the future!

I try to make it easy as possible for newcomers, I know it can be quite confusing at first, but with a little step by step help its really very easy. You got a question, someone will have an answer.

also, here is a good 3ft HDMI cable you should use.

No DVI on my display. I have a 10 year old Tosh 50" RPTV HDTV ready TN50X81. Best resolution is 1080i. It will not accept 720p as I already tried it.

I'm an audio guy per se and not having access to the lossless tracks is not something I'd want to be without for BD soundtracks with the PS3. The upgraded picture quality is nice but not enough IMHO.

Think I'm going to try the Onyko 605 with an HDMI connection to the PS3. It is available for $379 including shipping from Amazon.
