As the title says, Toshiba's own HD DVD-R drives are failing to meet the specs laid out by Toshiba and the DVD-Forum for the format. Actually, the results are quite horrible.

Here's a scan produced by C't, a highly regarded German tech magazine. As you can see, the error rate greatly exceeds the thick red line (which shows the maximum error rate allowed by the specs). Things get even worse when you attempt to burn HD DVD-RDL media. Just think about how much worse it will be when Toshiba manages to produce 2x burners...

By the way, the quality index score they gave of '--' is the lowest possible score they can give. I guess we know why the drives haven't hit the mass market eh?"

i love the response to this news on AVS most of the PRO HD DVD anti-blu-ray supporters are brushing this off like it does not matter or something. like one of the HD DVD supporters stated "i hope there is no HD DVD burners only ROM drives"..you know i hope so too that way The Absorbtion of HD DVD by Blu-Ray will happen faster.

Wow, coaster city.

And, to add to the fun: No HD DVD-RW.

First they say "30 GB is big enough", then they say "lossy audio is good enough", then "disc recording camcorders don't matter" and now "burners don't matter"?

Talk about delusional eh?

Way to go HD-DVD. You just alienated the computer market.

o'l and disc scratch resistance coating does not matter, or THE Blu-Ray format is a unfinished format..that's the ONE that they need to shut up about because the Blu-Ray format is more finished than HD DVD. its only just the interactive SOFTWARE of BD-J is not as fine tuned as IHD...right now..big whoop..the interactive software is just as good as DVD what we have been in use for years already...

people just want for the majority is to stick the disc in and watch the d@mn MOVIE.
something Blu-Ray does very well.

No HD DVD-RW, while BD has it (RW is very impotant for me)

Here is more info.

Posted by MediumRare on CDRlabs.com forum:

The latest issue of c't (No. 20/2007, available now in Europe) has a look at the first HD-DVD burner available: the Toshiba SD-L902A.

This drive is atypical, in that it's a slim line (notebook) drive and only available in some top of the line Toshiba notebooks- you'd be hard pressed to get one without that "packaging". Furthermore, it's a 1x burner and takes over 56 min for a SL disc (15 GiB) and more than 114 min. for a DL disc (28 GiB).
...
Frankly, this drive is less than impressive- slow, expensive, poor quality burns and hard to get. And this more than a year after BluRay burners became readily available!

Unless something drastic happens, HD-DVD burners are dead. Maybe that's another reason some studios are plugging this format exclusively?

fwiw..they nuked the thread at AVS. Apparently the discussion of HD DVD hardware defects isn't allowed.

I cannot believe they nuked the thread. They are trying to hide information from people. If a thread gets out of hand, lock it.

David Bott is a lying son of a *****. He claims that his site is neutral but these types of actions are absolute proof that all of his staff are on the take from the Toshiba-MSFT Mafia.

Sure. Open a new entry under AVS. I'm sure the owners will be rightfully pleased.

This result simply shows the fact that HD DVD's optical system has not enough margin (very little sweet spot) to record accurate signal on the disc, and this is the reason why virtually all of optical drive vendors chose BD many years ago as the next gen optical disc.

FYI: at least in Japan, no body rely on Toshiba's drive quality, even Toshiba itself ... years ago, Toshiba started their DVD recorder products utilizing Matsushita's drives, and years after, they adopted Toshiba drive for some recorders, but since there were so many problems happened with those units and many consumers complained about that, Toshiba gave up using Toshiba drive since then ...

Wish I brought my camera, but the two boxes of loose HD DVD-R looked really lonely surrounded by about a couple of dozen boxes BD-R. BD-RE, DL BD-R, DL BD-RE from JVC, Panasonic, TDK, Sony, Fuji, Mitsubishi and others.

Look at this August amazon japan ranking, which counts all of its products:
BD is in most of the time, DVD is rarely seen, HD DVD???? NONE
