Default 2001: A Space Odyssey Specs

Looks like Amazon updated the aspect ratio, i'm very, very pleased with it being in its native 2.20 aspect ratio. Hopefully we don't get "the black bars are growing on my tv" threads also very nice that blu-ray got a pcm track for this. now my big question is the length of this film. the original premeire of the theatrical release was 160 min. and ppl whined about it and it was cut down to 141 min in both the movies and dvd. now im looking at the blu-ray version and it says its length is 149 min. so what gives? anybody have any knowledge on some extra footage put into this version and why not just give us the full 160 min. version.

According to pretty much everyone, that excess footage was destroyed after the premiere on Kubrick's orders. It was allegedly all from the very beginning segment with the monkeys, and he felt the current cut more than established what he was going for.

so where is this extra 8 min. of footage coming from? i had heard originally that the opening part before "The Dawn of Man" you saw the monolith floating around for a while with music and then the movie started, any chance that is in this version.

One thing I hope to see more of in Blu-ray is the option to see the different versions/lengths of films. They can branch the additional "footage" with a menu to select the version you want to see.

I have a question. Did anyone see the theatrical release actually in the theater. I did about 20 years ago and I could swear it contained an intermision or long prologue segment. Could this be what was cut out of DVD releases?

I saw it at a film festival a number of years ago, and I do seem to recall a monolith floating about in space at the beginning. I do not recall an intermission.

i have heard rumors that originally the monolith floated around during the prelude, hopefully this is in.

I believe in the 'Insiders Thread' it was stated that the 160m version has a second 'AE antenna' scene that was edited before widespread theatrical release. The difference between the 141m and 149m was the prolouge and intermission is added for the 149m version.

There was always an intermission in ALL the theatrical releases as well as on the DVDs

I think the rumors are true, but 8 minutes of monolith floating in space is a lot in terms of screen time.

Another possibility (aside from a lebeling error). In the Special Edition DVD of Rembetiko they added at the beginning COMPLETE credits and a plaque-insert giving a little history of Rembetiko music and the Smyrna Disaster that led to the development of this musical form. It was very tastefully done, beginning with a freeze frame from the opening of the film and old rembetiko music playing on a gramophone for soundtrack. After the credits and plaque it went to the start of the film as usual. (The freeze frame started moving.) In the original theatrical release only the basic credits were given at the beginning.

Interesting. I am certain there was no intermission when I saw it at a film festival. Where did the intermission occur?

Right after HAL reads the lips of the two astronauts, finding out he's going to be disconnected. I guess it's possible that there were theatrical showings that skipped the intermission (after all, the movie is less than 2-1/2 hours), but it was certainly there the 7 or 8 times I saw it in the theatre during it's inital release and subsequent re-releases.

Yes, and a festival is not exactly a theatrical release. They could have cut the intermission to fit a tight festival schedule.
