Default help designing sound system

Ok, so I finally got a HDTV after waiting forever. I got a Sony KDL-46v2500, I know it lacks some features but it looks pretty good with a 360 connected to it. Before I get a PS3 I want to get a sound system, I was looking at peoples signatures here and saw that a few people have the Sony STRDG-1000 Receiver, is that pretty good? I found it on newegg for almost 700$ I was looking to spend around 550 - 600$ or so but if this is a pretty future complient receiver I guess I just better save more money.
Also, what speakers should I get to go with it? Again im not looking to spend a boat load of money but I would like to get something that sounds good and is going to last me a while. Any links and information/comments/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I believe a 7.1 system would work for my living room but if you guys absolutely need pics first I can upload some.

what ever you get, make sure it has DTS-hd, for those FOX titles. On the new fox stuff you need a DTS-hd player & reciver to get 5.1 or you just end-up getting 2.0 audio.

I am a little pissed at fox for not adding at lease PCM 5.1 to their bd's

Here is a short list of recievers which can decode dts-hd. There are options for most any price range. Note that some of these might not upconvert component or other signals to 1080p through hdmi, but most will pass through fine.

Onkyo might be your best bet.

Thanks for the list kpkelley, the http://www.onkyousa.com/model.cfm?cl...m=TX-SR605&p=i does look pretty nice and has that dts-hd.
I have another question, this one seems to have Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding, im a noob to this stuff but do you have to tell it which one of those to use or does it just sense it through the hdmi input or the digital audio input or whatever and use whatever codec it senses?

some people on this site recommended the onkyo TX-SR605 to me so i returned the pioneer i got and picked one up at circuit city for 500$. you could prob find it for 400$ online but i like to buy things like that in stores. I really like it and would recommend it to you.

I got the black one in-store but they run an online exclusive that comes in all white and it looks nice.

I highly recommend these Boston Acoustic speakers for the front and rear surrounds. You won't find a better quality speaker for the price.

Methinks you're a little mixed up. You can still get 5.1 DTS without a DTS-HD compatible player, it'll just be the 1.5 mbps core of the DTS track. PCM is the one that concerns 5.1/2.0, but this has to do with HDMI/analog (which the PS3 doesn't have) vs. optical, not the player. PCM 5.1 cannot be carried by optical, only PCM 2.0. In order to utilize PCM 5.1, you would need HDMI (for the PS3) or analog outs on the player/inputs on the receiver.

So if I hook-up the 5 analogs on my Samsung1200 to my yamaha I would get DTS 5.1 (the DTS-HD gets down converted) on the fox BD's (IE 28 weeks later) ?????????????

That is correct. You'll get the 1.5 mbps core of the DTS track. According to DTS, you should be able to do this via optical as well. And it should be 6 analogs . . . 5 + sub.

I will have to pickup some cable this week.

this is all that I could find on DTS web site...

'You can enjoy DTS Digital Surround at the full 1.5 Mbps data rate by hooking up any Blu-ray Disc or HD DVD player with DTS-HD Digital Out to your existing AV Receiver with DTS. Simply connect a basic digital audio cable to the S/PDIF outputs and inputs of your player and receiver. S/PDIF is a universal digital audio connection found on nearly all home entertainment products. It has both optical and coax type connectors. This connection will allow DTS Digital Surround (at the full 1.5 Mbps data rate) to be transferred and decoded, delivering improved surround audio..'

I will have to pop in 28weeks & play with the settings

S/PDIF is just an optical cable. How do you have your player connected now, and which receiver are you using with it?

You should be getting 5.1 DTS with it hooked up that way. If you're only getting 2.0, check to make sure it's not set to stereo mode.

Here are some pics of my current set up and where I was planning to put the speakers: http://s230.photobucket.com/albums/e...1/hometheatre/

I still need to move the old tv outta the room but for lanning on 360 its a good spot where it is for the time being.

Ive been realling looking at that onkyo 605 and its right around my price range Now I just need some links to speakers that I should get. Those Boston acoustics are a little to pricey. Id like to spend around 200 - 250 for all 7.1 speakers, if thats impossible without getting bad equipment i guess ill just have to save longer.

Save a little longer. At least another five hundred more to your US$250 to get a decent 5.1. Like L'Oreal says, "You're worth it."

For that space, you don't need 7.1 nor do you have the space for it.
